While the words “Cadillac” and “Nurburgring” don’t classically go hand-in-hand General Motors is apparently out in Germany proving that its CTS-V can hold its own with just about anything orbiting the Green Hell., and they’ve got the photo to prove it.

GM announced early this afternoon that driver John Heinricy was able to pilot the LSA V-8 powered V car to a potentially record-breaking time of 7:59:32, which is said to be the fastest “documented” lap by a sedan…ever. We’re even more excited to hear that one of Cadillac minions caught the lap on a video that is set to be released within a few days.

That is a very impressive time. I only hope it translates into more sales for Cadillac’s sake.

I think that’s a great accomplishment for an American car company, whose cars are typically regarding as being big on power, low on handling. Looks to be an interesting car, I hope it’s popular.

Just wait for the new M5.

DTS still lapping

dieselhead May 9th, 2008 6:33 PM Link

What, the new M5 will be so ugly we’ll forget that it is slower?

Greg May 9th, 2008 6:45 PM Link

BMW M5 did a 7:52.xx . . .

I remember, because it was less than 10 seconds slower than the new Corvette Z06 which did a 7:42.99.

Not to be a caddy hater, I really do hope they find success even if they aren’t my cup of tea, but that time doesn’t count. There is no way that is the stock suspension set up and if the CTS-V has a roll cage option, I’ll eat my shorts. Give the car to Auto Motor und Sport for a proper lap time.

Joshua is right, that is way too low for a CTS even if it is a “V”. plus there is clearly a roll cage going diagonally from left to right

I think the American Auto industry is toast.

No Matter what they do, the naysayers come out of the woods.

God it must be tough to get up every morning hating America……and yet not recognizing it.

Cpngratulations Caddy!

Everything American sucks and everything Nazi is awesome no matter how iffy the interior quality, overpriced, ugly, unreliable, unnecessarily overengineered, and out of touch with the road they are, don’t you guys read car magazines?!

And the Cadillac looks low because it’s obviously under compression. I’m sure any of those official time cars include roll cages - what insurance company would or responsible company would have it otherwise.

Of course if one of the Nazi war-wagons had posted this time, there’d be all kinds of praise. I’m not a Cadillac lover, but I’m sick of the German a$$ kissing over their overrated and boring cars (REAL cars that are fun don’t need 600HP to be enjoyable). The emperor has no clothes.

I driven the Neurburgring a few times each year since ‘05 and no helmets or roll cages are required, just a little driving skill :)

dante May 10th, 2008 9:58 AM Link

The track doesn’t require it, but I’m sure GM’s insurance company would and it’s something a responsible company would require anyway. Putting aside human concern, how would that look to have a driver in their new car killed or paralyzed while testing if he screwed up?

Mena May 10th, 2008 3:31 PM Link

I have to agree with dante and was going to mention that the cars suspension looked compressed. Also, the car is going into a corner and it’s leaning a bit. Look at the bottom of the front bumper and compare it to the road below. Also, a roll cage would make the car heavier so a car without it might be a bit quicker.

I know I sound like a prude, but I fear that some manufacturer’s driver is going to kill themselves on the famed course, all for the sake of marketing. Nissan seemed obsessed for bragging rights with their GTR –The kind of long-term obsession that a Japanese manufacturer gets. Tenths of a second on the Nordschleife depends on conditions.

Good for Cadillac– but I’m convinced it’s John Heinricy. After setting records with a Cobalt and Chevy HHR, I’m thinking he would have broken a record with a plastic Big Wheel and enough tailwind down the long straight. . .

Mark May 11th, 2008 2:49 PM Link

Good for Cadillac.

Like Porsche and Ferrari guys for the last decade trying to explain why the Corvette beats their prized possessions every which way for a fraction of the cost, BMW and MB owners will be left whimpering in the corner talking about “feel”, “heritage” and other subjective, and ultimately, meaningless measurements.

Dante, your so wrong because your right! dont you know that most of the people that post here are experts on the auto industry because they read Motor Trend and Auto Week at the grocer while helping mom fill the cart? Besides the M5 wouldnt be direct competition for the CTSV, that would be the M3 sedan.

andrew May 12th, 2008 9:45 AM Link

that’s not a roll cage. it’s obvious he was making the run after stopping at home depot to buy pvc pipe. duh!
