bmwscreenhl.jpgWhile much of the action on BMW’s stand at the 2008 Geneva Motor Show focused on the new M3 Convertible, there were some interesting goings on inside of the new X6 on display.

Much has been made of automakers providing vehicle-based internet access, but BMW is looking to take the lead in that cutting-edge arena. The automaker is planning to offer a production version of its ConnectedDrive system by the end of the year, which will allow for unlimited web browsing while on the go. BMW says that the functioning display model it has in the X6 at Geneva is a prototype, but that the final consumer version of the system won’t look a lot different.

ConnectedDrive will be interfaced with BMW’s much-discussed iDrive, with the web pages appearing on a high resolution, dash-mounted display (pictured). The engineers have wisely limited front-seat access to the system to when the engine is turned off, but passengers with an optional rear display (and a special iDrive interface) will be able to browse while the car is running.

Oh, that makes sense. Take the much-derided for it’s complicated i-Don’t-Drive system and add another layer of confusion to it. Just what’s needed in the “ultimate driving machine.”

Let’s hope they make this available as a option, rather than a “delete.”

The ultimate “browsing maching”? While I recognize that this sort of thing IS the future, I can’t say that it gets me excited for the next generation of sportscars.

Great. And you know someone will hack it so the browser will work when the car is in motion - just like has happened with DVD navagation systems already - hacking those to play DVD’s while the car is in motion on the front screen.

What network will they be accessing that will provide unlimited availability? Will BMW provide a lifetime voucher for some fort of satellite communication? Will it really be unlimited, or will it be confined to certain areas?

sucks for the front seat passenger.

I guess when your cars are ugly on the outside, cheap looking on the inside, and the competition offers the same performance for a lot less money, you need to offer something to buyers.

Is this really necessary? Like they need anything else to make their cars more over-priced.

Maybe I’m old fashioned, but I always assumed the point of a car was for transportation from Point A to Point B and the point of a computer was to get information off the internets. I’m at a loss for why you would ever even need the internet inside your car. This makes no sense to me

If you could connect your laptop to it, I would see it as a perfect salesman’s car.

Hey, this is a realistic scenario: let’s browse the net while stuck up in traffic. Too bad for the driver, but better for the passengers.

Now, it’s up to one hacker to find how to get into the car’s computer via internet and stop it in the most convenient location to kidnapp the occupants. Twisted, but possible.
