‘08 Geneva: Lancia Revives Delta Nameplate for 2009

When we think of names of legendary Lancias, our minds immediately dart between "Stratos" and "Fulvia," but quickly make their way around to Delta - the Greek letter applied to the boxy hatchback that all but dominated the rally scene in the 1980s. That name is back, as Lancia's newest car - a compact five-door hatch based off Fiat's Bravo - will debut at the Geneva Motor Show under the Delta moniker.

Looking much like the Delta HPE concept shown at the 2006 Paris Auto Show, the Delta isn't at all a retro throwback, like the brand's Fulvia concept. Rather, the car carries styling themes introduced with the Ypsilon to a new level, increasing the angular sheetmetal while retaining a traditional Lancia grille.

We know little on the new Delta at this point, other than to say the car will be fitted with turbocharged gas and diesel motors, ranging in power from 120 to 200 horsepower. Six-speed transmissions, in manual, semi-automatic and full-auto forms will also be offered, but Lancia's mum on what engine gets which tranny.

We'll know more on the car when we arrive in Geneva, but in the meanwhile, peruse the released photographs of Lancia's new hatch - and start praying those in charge are already tinkering on an Integrale version. Heck, if they're smart, maybe even Abarth can help...

LANCIA RELEASE

The Lancia Delta will debut at the 78th Geneva International Motor Show.

Delta is a historical name associated with a peak in Lancia’s motoring past but it is also a mathematical symbol that stands for change, difference and evolution.

From this viewpoint, the Lancia Delta is the first product of the new Lancia philosophy. It has an original, unique positioning, the combination of two values that are fundamental for the brand, elegant styling and a daring, innovative attitude, that inspires all aspects of its marketing and communications activities.

The first totally new car in Lancia’s second century makes its appearance today, with an unparalleled design that upholds the brand’s vocation for innovation.

I hope we get some version of this when Alfa Romeo comes back to the States, maybe with a diesel

The Stig

Comes with a front end only a Pontiac would love

Ducati Minor

A diesel Alfa would sell here about as well as a purple Chery.

This is a gorgeous vehicle, just change the rims

Cicero

Since Mercedes Benz, BMW, and Audi are working to bring diesels here, and Caddy is working to do the same, Alfa as a luxury brand would be ignorant to not do so

Soupie

it would probably look better in person, but this car does nothing for me...steering wheel looks horrible, but worst part...the rims...they look like puke.

Would it be legally possible to have this imported and converted to us specs?
