Shanghai Auto Show: Geely’s Meirenbao II “Optimizes The Plumpness”

geely-meirenbao-ii-600.jpg

Verbatim description from the Geely Meirenbao II concept’s display card:

The design motivation for Geely Coupe is to show the nimble and sturdy image of highly aggressive beasts in our minds. It has optimized the plumpness lacked in the existing models; meanwhile, it also integrates lines and surfaces with sharpness to distinguish the features of a racing car, thus strengthening the full figure of wheel house and fender to build a steady shape. You can feel the strong aggressiveness of beast from the shape of front headlamp and grid, and the ultra speed expressed by the streamlines of rear lamp and bumper.

We couldn’t have said it any better ourselves--especially since no other information was available on this risky (but not entirely charmless) coupe.

The propotions remind me of the great small cheaper Euro sports coupes of the seventies, though it lacks a little of the elegance. The grille looks inspired by Facel Vega, but doesn't inspire like the Facel.

this is a nice design overall. I especially like the rear end.
however, I see the head lamps just as the ones alfa romeo use (3 lamps) even their design is the same (which gives the car the angry look). As well, the grille would have been alfa romeoish if it was a bit triangular.
in addition to the front end, I see the car has smaller rear tire well than that in front (look at picture 3). they should have increased the well size at the back and fitted the car with bigger wheels which will even give it a more aggressive look.
overall though, I saw the car sort of resembles muscle cars. As a matter of fact I was thinking they can build one of the forgotten american muscles based on a similar design.

Oh dear... this is a DISASTER of design cliche. To make matters worse, it is just plain FOUL looking. Ugh.

Jeff

I definitely see some Alfa Romeo cues, along with a little first-gen Acura CL.

Optimizes the fact that they stole the design from the Brera at least...

Ath.

Nonsence... Its the long and passionate tradition ox chinese car design well blended to attract the passionate "alfisti" and to show that alfa romeo stole the design... NOT. This car would become more apealing if it went straight from the assembly line to the recycle line and die!!!

Patrick from Astoria

I don't see Alfa influence as much as a more contemporary Lancia Hyena. Maybe it's not pretty, per se, but it is kind of compelling in an aggro- econoracer way.

And besides, I do so love those clunky-but-charming translations. Nothing tops some of the Japanese stuff from the Sixties and early Seventies, though; absolute Zen poetry to laugh about for weeks. (Caveat: Am a former semi-pro translator with my fair share of, um, clever phrase turnings.)

Don

Do the Chinese make ANYthing original?
