Shanghai Auto Show: Buick Riviera Concept Live Shots And Impressions

shanghai_riviera_intro_600.jpg

Given that Buick of China handily outsells its Stateside counterpart, it was hardly a surprise that General Motors chose to debut their Riviera gullwing concept in Shanghai.

Designed primarily at the Pan Asia Technical Automotive Center (PATAC) here in Shanghai, the car was unveiled by Rick Wagoner (GM chairman and CEO), along with Ed Welburn, vice president of GM Global Design, and Hu Maoyuan, chairman of Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation (SAIC), GM’s major joint-venture partner in China.

According to the automaker, the Riviera coupe’s carbon-fiber flanks provide a styling brief for future Buicks. GM didn’t really offer up much in the way of details on the car’s powertrain, simply stating that it has been engineered to accept a “new hybrid system that will go into production at Shanghai GM… in 2008.

Overall, feel as if it's just another concept car that's been done over and over again. The grill kinda gives me Dick Tracy flashbacks (never good)and I agree that the lights are a bit much. Wish I liked it more. Wanted to like it more. Just can't.

"it's not east it's not west it's not usa or china" said mr.james shyr which means:
"we want to destroy the national identities and cultures and make every product identical so that the masses(the herd) will accept it everywhere and we can make more profits".
I really hope a day the masses(the herd) will wake up and realize the world we are living in.
this buick have no identity,is just a piece of metal made to appeal the herd.

ryan

people love conformity, marco. we're all part of the herd for GM.... and Ford.... and toyota....

(gets lost in big brother nightmare)

marco

yes ryan, but maybe this global bubble a day will pop and maybe people will return thinking with their own brains....just maybe.....

a good looking car is a good looking car, i dont care who designed it for what country. its infinetly more exciting than any buick offering in the US. i love the perportions, espically from the side view. some of the detail treatment needs work but thats what a concept car is for.

mo

I totally agree with naggs, the car looks great for buicks. wish they do camaro based one.

Johnny Rocket

A good-looking Buick? No way. Buicks are for old people. But I do like it.

marco

ford mustang, next camaro and dodge challenger are good looking cars, not this wimpy half-chinese crap!
you american are getting completely insane..."buicks are for the old people" and which cars are for the "young people"...maybe the asian craps? or mercedes ,bmw and volvo used as taxis in europe?
try to drive a camaro or a mustang in europe and you will see all the heads turning both young and old.
american cars MUST keep their style and not became asian look wimpy cars, much much better an old big buick than a ridicolous asian crap such as toyota prius,or nissans, subaru's etc....

darren

This is a really nice looking car, though i think it needs a bit more of a nod to classic Riviera design to bear that nameplate. (Maybe just a slightly more pronounced boat tail.) This would also look good as a drop-top. Buick has had some nice concepts in the past (Bengal, anyone?) but the corporate vision of Buick never seems to map into the reality of the public's perception of Buick.

Jeff

Not bad looking, but it's yet another concept car GM is never going to build. The next Riviera, if there ever is a next Riviera, will look nothing like this concept.

GM isn't capable of doing something gutsy with Buick anymore. A new Riv wouldn't hurt, but what they really need is a new Grand National.

I live in germany and if i see a mustang or older camaros here, i always think "my god, there are some pretty dumb people out there (the corvette is an exception)". These cars look ridiculous on european roads, and the mustang has the chasis of a lada (the same rear suspension at least). Alfa 8C, the new maserati Granturismo, Astons, Lamobos and Ferraris, even the AMG mercs and S-line audis are proper lookers that would really make me turn my head when i see one on the street. The reason the E-class is the predominent taxi car here, is that it has a really smooth ride and the driver doesn't feel fatigued after a full working day. The fact that its used as a taxi car doesn't make it any worse.

marco

Rob,when I visited america I thought"my god here the number of dumb people is astonishing judging by how many ugly asian cars there are on american freeways and cities" and then you can't compare astons, lambos, ferrari with cars that worths less than a quarter of the price.
OF COURSE you turn your head when you see a super car like these,me too:-)
but you must compare mustangs, camaro etc..with the AVERAGE european car and in this sector the americans rules!
