Shanghai Auto Show: BMW CS Concept Live Shots And Impressions

shanghai_conceptcs_intro.jpg

We’ve just returned from the unveiling of BMW’s stunning new CS Concept here in Shanghai, and to be honest, we’re not entirely sure what to make of it.

The long and low four-door coupe is definitely better looking in person, but our staff remains split on what to think of it. It’s certainly an aggressive look, and it absolutely carries BMW’s “flame surface

Man, the front grill looks really out of place. Looks like Bangle didn't know how to do it and where to place it. And the rest is too Rapide-ish.

The front's not bad at all. What's wrong is that broken crease-line in the rear door. It looks like it was an afterthought stuck on the clay model that just sort of fell off before they took the moulds and no one noticed until it was too late. Is the other side the same?

It's interesting, but not beautiful. I think this is one of those designs that could be great if they took three to four items out of the exterior graphical treatment.

UGLY. Makes the first generation bangle butted, leadened eye lid, 7 Series seem beautiful by comparison. Looks like something a ten year old would draw out of boredom in class

It seems like the people responsible for this car (Chris?) didn't quite understand the word "elegant". In fact, the word I will use to describe this new CS is "harsh". There is no beauty in the lines of the car and it is not nearly as sexy and appealing as CLS and Rapide, even Panamera is better looking. I can't believe I am saying this, but the side profile of the front-end reminded me of that of a Dodge Charger. My gosh, what am I look at...

THATS IT, im killing bangle.

Nothing original in this design - the first shot I saw was from the side and at first I thought it was a derivation of the Rapide, which otehrs have noted.

But look at the interior - where is iDrive? Does this mean it is dead for future BMWs? Lets hope so - it stopped me buying a 750i last year.

I think the front looks a little too much like a Dodge (maybe the Charger). The broken crease-line is there so the car doesn't look as long as it is. Bangle doesn't design the cars, Adrian van Hooydonk does. He is the one behind most of the most recent BMW designs.

I can see a quite a few people purchasing this because it's just different. That doesn't necessarily mean that it purchased because it's beautiful or what BMW used to stand for. I have given up on BMW with their designs, the new M3 is a small return to their heritage, however with Bangle in charge of design, we will continue to see design with no basic concept. A designer should be able to expreess their style without dissmissing the basic concept that BMW's have been founded on. This is what Bangle needs to control with his concept and the concept of the other designers on the team. Go back to the basic concept and make everyone happy instead of this new'er concept and piss off the loyalists.

Does anybody else think that someone @ BM corporate decided that they needed to fire a shot in response to the AM Rapide concept and this is what they came up with?

Seriously, when I first saw the car, my first thought was how bad Aston must have messed up the Rapide after the sale, then I realized it was actually the BM.

I like how all the BMW quote "Fans" always seem to hate any new BMW Design. Those that really appreciate BMW, like it for not only it's Evolutionary if not Revolutionary Style, Performance & dare I say Technology.

Sorry Grandpa but the Times are a Changing!

looks like something you'd sketch while bored in a lecture/presentation - would be very interesting to see it in the flesh :)

I really enjoy reading your comments, some of you guys are so serious...

This is just a concept, relax!

But I have to say I agree with most of you:
On the front part: there's something wrong in it... I think the hood is too straight and the grill is definitely too high, i would have made the hood curve a bit to finish on the grill.

Also: "I can’t believe I am saying this, but the side profile of the front-end reminded me of that of a Dodge Charger." can't say it better!

That's kind of weird isn't it? My "Kitch" side likes the new charger but I find very strange that BMW adopted this kind of design... those lines are very recognisable and that's the first thing I thought.., Is that a bmw??? or did they made a mistake and upload the pic of the new doge charger with four windows??? ( just kidding :P )

I think the car is not this bad but really need some improvement, I like the general line but the front has something wrong and I would do something for the dodge like rear lines... ( They certainly don't want this car to look like a charger or even worst the new avenger?????)

Brad Cousins

Best looking Bimmer, in many a long year. This one looks good from any angle, very smooth, and the front end looks plenty aggressive, compared to other recent stylings from Chris Bungle ( that's right Bungle, notBanle, no typo ). Proportions look good, neat attention to detail, unlike the hideous 7 seies, which was so ugly, it must have cost BMW sales.

Bob

Not bad, the car looks nice. But I think that you need to put vents right under the grille. Also the roof over the front row seats needs to be a bit lower. I'm not sure about the shark-like grille either. The rear- view-mirrors on the outside look kinda out of place. Despite these little faults, I still think the car looks really cool.

They say it will use a V-12. Does that mean that BMW will update the V-12 ?
