Chrysler LLC penned a deal last July with Chery, the largest independent automaker in China, in a production venture that will see Chrysler sell Chery cars to the U.S. Under the contract, Chery will export its A1 model under Chrysler Group’s Dodge brand.

During a recent interview, Chery’s chief executive and chairman, Yin Tongyao, said that the Chery A1, a 1.3-liter compact hatch, has almost completed its road and crash testing overseas. The compact A3 sedan will then follow into the American market.

“The need of our small displacement models is growing, as the mileage was boosted by 40 percent to 35 miles per gallon in the U.S.,” Yin noted, “Chrysler expressed they want to cooperate more with us after Bob Nardelli stepped up as the new CEO. We’re currently in discussion with them as to establishing a joint venture.”

Chery Auto hit its one million car milestone last year. The ambitious Chinese automaker will exhibit 26 models at the Beijing Auto Show (a.k.a. Auto China 2008). Look for more from WINDING ROAD’s China correspondent later this weekend.

At least it shouldn’t affect their quality ratings.

First, it was Chrysler and Nissan, now it’s Chrysler and Chery. Sounds like Chrysler has more ability to produce cars than there are people who want to buy them.

Just what we needed here - more crappy chinese products.

rageous- That’s what they said about Korean cars not too long ago. While you may not think much of them either, there’s no denying that they are now quality cars and people are buying a lot of them.

at chartguy, these collaboration of chrysler with other makers proves that chrysler CAN’T build cars. look at both agreements. they can’t afford developing a new small sized car and so they are offering giving up the ram with nissan, and probably a huge share of profit to chery. chrysler would be better if they kept nissan away from the truck competition and if they took all the profit behind small cars.
look at GM, they are building their own mini car. that is what chrysler wanna do but can’t afford.
I only hope Chrysler doesn’t make these cars so ugly as the rest of the line.

mo, Chrysler can build cars; it makes more economic sense to partner with other businesses to reduce costs and simplify operations. GM shares production with Toyota with the Pontiac Vibe–a re-badged Toyota Matrix (which, in itself, is a Corolla hatchback).

Chrysler is by no means giving up the truck to Nisaan anymore than GM was to Isuzu. Nissan failed to make an impact in the pickup market and is in need of continuing its place in light truck development. The Nissan Titan never approached the Dodge Ram in numbers; future Nissan trucks won’t either. But Nissan could cut costs by borrowing Dodge pickup frames.

Trinks is correct about the Koreans. The same was said about the Japanese in the 1960s.

Is any American car company going to try to build a mini-car in America? The American companies have never made money on small cars as far as I know. The difference between Chrysler and rest of the “big three” is that Chrysler had to jettison all of their foreign holdings as part of their strategy that ultimately resulted in their bail out under Iaccoca’s leadership 30 years ago. G.M. and Ford have European and Japanese holdings to subcontract their small car production.
