that would be totally insane….. i wanna see that. it is like making the cadillac sixteen come to life, as a bentley though.
News from the mad engineer-filled hallways of Bentley confirms that the company has built a prototype Arnage with a little something extra under the hood.
The powerplant in question is all-conquering quad-turbo W-16 that powers corporate cousin Bugatti’s Veyron supercar.
(Click through the jump to find out what’s behind the monster prototype.)
The rumor is that boss of both Bentley and Bugatti, Franz-Josef Paefgen, is behind this monumental Arnage, though there isn’t word yet as to what sort of future he sees for it. A one-thousand horsepower rear-wheel-drive Bentley would seem to be a bit of a handful, even for the most practiced pilot; but a slightly detuned W16 behind the flying B could make for a highly-desirable special edition.
Such an Arnage would certainly trump the current Flying Spur for power, price, and prestige, and would almost as certainly become a legend in its own time. That’s an emphatic “go for it” from us then, for those of you keeping score at home. But tell us what you think, would the Veyron’s mill be overkill for a Bentley? Hash it out in ‘comments’.

Awesome……. Would make the Maybach seem kinda meek… Sad to think that Cadillac had this idea in the works for a few years now and decided to scrap it.
VW Group shouldn’t dilute the ultra-ultra-ultra exclusivity of the Veyron by using its engine this way.
At best, perhaps a normally aspirated W-16 putting out about 615hp.
If I had paid 1.4Million for a Veyron, I wouldn’t be happy to see its major parts appearing in *any* other vehicle.
So much money went into developing that engine… Seems like they ought to do something more with it, but shoveling it off on another marquee isn’t particularly inspiring.
Well, that would be absolutely insane if they put it into a Bentley. It’s something that I’d like to see happen.
And I doubt that there would be much diluting of the exclusivity of the Veyron if they put that engine into a Bentley, since I’m sure that the Bentley would cost a ridiculous amount of money too.
I wouldn’t worry about it. The only reason to put an engine like that in a Bentley is because the Bentley is going to carry so much extravagently unnecessary luxury crap that it’ll be only slightly lighter than a Saturn V rocket.
It’ll be the slowest, most powerful car in history, but at least it’ll have an umbrella holder in each door.
I like the idea of that engine getting used in other vehicles, but detuned in such away that it’s not stepping on the Bugatti’s toes. Maybe as a twin turbo or NA as someone else suggested.
Brilliant, simply brilliant! Bugatti, despite all the $$$$ is DOA — this scheme may allow VW to recoup some of the Bugatti investment and will be a BIG scoop for Bentley.
VW/Audi could provide the W-16 motor without the four turbos. That lower output could make the Bentley more practical–if owning an Arnage was practical, I mean.
The quad turbo W-16 made sense on the Veyron from the standpoint that the main design goal was top speed. Since the Bentley Arnage actually attempts to provide luxurious real-world transport for four people, the full-up Veyron engine in the Arnage would be a bit of overkill in terms of weight, reliability, fuel consumption, and drivability. Of course, these types of cars have nothing to do with logic and everything to do with overkill, so we may see the full-power engine.
A detuned version would make the most sense, but regardless, it’s going to be one lucky limo driver who gets to drive a W-16 Arnage. Of course, with 2MPG fuel consumption at full throttle and 5MPG city, the range of the Arnage with a 25 US Gal tank will be about 50 to 125 miles! Jeeves will have to fill this one up every time he drops the good master off at the party across town.
Why go convservative now on a car company that is all about over the top? I say go for 1200 hp, all wheel drive special edition run. That’ll show them who’s boss.
[…] code-name “Project Lydia” in reference to Ettore Bugatti’s wife, would share the Veyron’s 8.0-liter W-16 engine, though it could be tuned to an even greater power output. The car would also be tighter and […]
