Tokyo Motor Show: BMW Concept 1-Series tii

p0040974.jpg

Those who think the 1-series is a spiritual successor to the BMW 2002 just got a nod from BMW. The Concept 1-series tii promises improved driving dynamics over the regular 1-series models and may be a smart way for BMW to avoid the pressure to build an M1.

Though no engine details were released, we’re confident the tii won’t be powered by the twin-turbo 3.0-liter inline-six. Why you ask? Because the original tii was about light weight, not raw power. A 2.0-liter four-cylinder producing 170 horsepower is a possibility.

Carbon-fiber reinforced plastic is used extensively to cut down on weight and the dark, flat finish cuts down on glare for the driver. There is no mention of actual weight loss compared with a production 1-series, but BMW describes it as “significant.

Yes.

It's no princess (the original 2002 was never a real work of art, either) but for a real-world combination of hard driving, everyday practicality and societal responsibility this looks about right.

It's nice to know that someone in Munich still understands. I'll be waiting.

I wouldn't be so joyful just yet. The M3 CSL follows the race-winning 3.0 CSL, but weighs hundreds of pounds more. I would be pleased if this were a homologation special of some sort and weighed under 3,100 lbs. That isn't lightweight territory, but it is progress.

With 170hp, unless this car weighs around 2500 lbs, it will be a total dog.

No iDrive! I'll take it!

my 99 jetta vr6 weighs 2600 lbs and has 174 hp. let's hope bmw can blow that out of the water.

(obviously i know the bmw is going to handle better and my is it pretty, but it had better be quicker in the straight.)

A four cylinder turbo diesel? Would it be light?

Nathan

I think I found a daily driver that will complement my weekend-only Elise quite nicely.

BMW needs to take a serious lesson from Porsche and build a reasonably priced "Junior GT3" ... My first BMW was a Golf yellow 1976 2002 (current drive is an '02 M3) and I'd love to see a 2008 era version of the same car.... One of the most interesting development of the 1 series is the intro of 6 pot front brake calipers ... first time ever from BMW.... So what would my wish list include: light weight manual sport seats, lightweight exhaust and wheelset, less sound deadening materials, some composite materials (but cost effective), and for fun why not a turbo 4 cylinder producing close to 300 hp...Why??
Can't be a serious "tii" version without a significant improvement in the "lb/hp" ratio... 3100 lbs over 300 hp ... This would be a serious achievement

[...] have the chance to experience the turbo version. With less than 100 examples currently in the U.S., the pert little coupe is quite rare. That scarceness is one of the reasons that this listing on eBay Motors is so [...]
