Question of the Day: What Concept Car Would You Take Home?

Buick Signia Sitting in Scrapyard

If you're at all familiar with the lifespan of concept cars, chances are you know their ultimate fate: either to be coddled in museums for the rest of their days or scheduled for an intimate date with the crusher.

We're thankful that many manufacturers have seen the light and began saving their one-offs in private collections. Sadly, no matter how valiant their efforts, many still slip through the cracks.

We point to the Buick Signia, which we found months ago parked in a lot filled with other vehicles to be scrapped. By no means are we saying it is (or ever was) an attractive vehicle, but we think it could have been placed with some institution nonetheless.

Which makes us wonder - if you could give a concept car a safe, loving foster home, which vehicular flight of fancy would you park in your garage? Have your say in 'comments'.

Not to name any particular models, but some concepts do need a good crushing.

Alfa Romeo B.A.T. cars. Any of them.

When I went to school in Detroit there was a junk lot with an AMC Eagle-based show car with a Subaru BRAT-type pick up bed. It was supposed to have been destroyed in the '70's, but for whatever reason was still around, albeit without most of its front end.

Ford Model U
I was very disappointed that they didn't produce it. Could have been a nice competitor in the small SUV market.

what about that Holden 50's low from one or two years ago... or maybe the Maybach coupe...

Sol

Dodge Copperhead

Ducati Minor

The 1971 Pontiac Firebird Pegasus. GM built some wonderful, if not always practical, concept cars. The fact that the General, with help from Ferrari, would assemble such a silly machine is a testament to romantic vision. This was truly more of a Ferrari than the Fiero could ever be.

It's got to be that Holden concept car, the Effijy... sex on wheels!

The Mercedes-Benz 2003 Vision CLS which ended up as a production car almost unaltered. Also the 2002 Vision GST which ended up as the R-Class losing all the appeal the concept car had

I've always been a Buick fan, and actually liked the 2000 LaCrosse concept - I thought it was a very modern car that was immediately identifiable as a Buick. When I heard Buick was going to produce a LaCrosse I was excited; unfortunately the production model has no connection to the concept other than the name.

MGBYG

The original Viper concept with funky windshield...

Otherwise, most were just polyester-resin-over-urethane-foam dream machines covered in lexan and dynoc...

Mazda Nagare/Ryuga, Bertone Alfa Romeo Carabo, Daihatsu Mudmaster-C.

Saab Aero X. Mmmmmmm.

Cadillac Sixteen.

The new CTS is a great effort but there's simply no other automobile with Sixteen's wondrous presence. None of the world's Audis, BMWs, Lexuses and Mercedes have ever achieved the elegant, refined look of this awesome concept. GM will lose by not building it.

Any of the chrysler concepts from the late 1990's. Chrysler had the best designs, it was a shame that they could not execute them.
