New Old Hotness: BMW Reveals the M1 Homage

BMW has officially released some images of its new super car concept that draws on the heritage of the legendary M1, appropriately dubbed the M1 Homage.

The Homage trades heavily on the iconic features of the original M1, while still incorporating enough new shapes and modern hotness to avoid looking even a bit “retro” (okay, maybe the louvered rear window is a little bit of a throwback, but you get the idea). BMW has done an especially nice job with the translation of the double kidney grille, incorporating it with the headlights and front intake in a blacked-out fascia that looks decidedly evil. We’re also huge fans of the new wave “cheese grater” wheels and the double roundels at the rear corners.

Have a look at the M1 Homage below and leave us your thoughts, in comments.

Excellent rendition of what Spy Hunter’s arch-rival would drive.

get rid of the louvered rear window, and slightly better rims. stunning otherwise.

It looks a lot better than the original and I know that Audi/Lamborghini are making the idea of a German mid-engine supercar more acceptable but, I don’t think a second M1 would be any more commercially successful than it was the first time around.

That is so amazingly 80s, I love it. The front looks like Magneto’s mask, though. Pic

not hot. not even close.

That’s a sick car. If I hadn’t seen the shot of the guy wiping it, I would have thought it was a render. Absolutely insane design. The only part that I’m not quite digging are those rims. I hope those aren’t going to be the style in the future.

yuck. that is one ugly design. ppl liked this probably coz it is a BMW aimed towards the R8….. ridiculous.

P.S: greg’s comment about magneto’s mask is so funny and so true.

I thought it was a student project.

The floating kidneys are a weird metaphor, and the negative spaces probably looked better in the Alias renderings…they just look unfinished in 3D.

Cannot stand the Bertone-look wheels. WTF where they thinking? The curves and the fleshy DRG do not need the wheels from the 70’s Maserati Boomerang concept!!

Close. No cigar.

I see a little bit of the 850 csi in the front end… Good looking concept, would be very difficult to translate into production though…

Just as crazy looking as the original M1. I like.

Uhhhh. WTF? That is butt ugly. Start over.

The car looks terrible. The entire BMW design staff needs to be replaced by robots. BMW would create mass confusion if they made a new M1 that wasn’t based on the 1 series, but still called an M1.

I think it looks great, except for the wheels. The wheels absolutely need to go. As far as minor nitpicking, I wish the front end was “solid”, a continuous line horizontally. I dig the rear window louvres, though.

Phil April 29th, 2008 2:11 PM Link

hmmm…some interesting aspects, and little features remind me other other concepts. i look at the lights and see the new camaro and the grill looks like they are waiting on the rest of the parts to arrive at the body shop for repairs. would look “fierce” coming up behind you though. the wheels are not my cup of tea (use the ones on the CS concept).

overall, doesn’t seem to jive with current design language (and maybe that’s the point).

When was the M1 comercially successful outside of track racing in the 1st place???

that message was directed to drving course…

Ben May 4th, 2008 5:10 PM Link

This is probably strictly concept. And I wonder if this is BMW’s way of saying that the new 1-series will not see an M variant. I mean, they’ve just revived the name on an entirely different type of vehicle.

Interestingly enough, my reaction is the opposite from yours — I think the car is drop-dead gorgeous from every angle depicted, but I absolutely hate the wheels, and would replace them in an instant.
