Land Rover Planning Full Range Of Hybrids?
Land Rover first indicated interest in hybrid vehicles with the Land-E diesel-electric concept vehicle it showed last year in Geneva.
But according to a print-only blurb in the May 16 issue of Autocar, the oddly styled futurethink Landie isn’t just a flash in the pan—the British 4x4 experts are pursuing hybrid models full-tilt. In fact, according to Autocar, while any production hybrids are unlikely to be diesel (too costly), the company is working to develop a system that it can apply throughout the range. The UK magazine quotes Land Rover MD Phil Popham as saying: “It won’t be a ‘totem pole’ model that some competitors have.

In the US, why not diesel power? We don't have that yet on any Land Rover currently for sale. LRs are expensive enough to cover the extra cost of diesel no problem. I don't understand why hybrid is going to do for me that diesel can't do better.

I don't know about that. Ford's PAG is trying to expand Land Rover sales. A big deal has been made of gas-electric cars having a 10% to 20% premium over their gas-only counterparts. Diesel-powered vehicles already call for a similar premium in MSRP and are in lower quantities. When one considers that diesel auto sales hang around 5% of total passenger vehicle sales in the US, one could see why Ford would be unsure about taking a risky and expensive avenue with unproven technology.
