Hot Wheels Recruits Automakers to Design Anniversary Cars

hondahl.jpg

For the first time in its history, Hot Wheels has invited outside designers to submit concepts for its miniature cars, as a way of celebrating its 40th anniversary. Not looking for just any concept off the street, Hot Wheels invited major automakers to submit designs and the results are, in a word, awesome.

Six car companies have submitted designs that will turned into 1/64 scale cars, and be released with Hot Wheel’s own car in a special set to go on sale this spring. After perusing the gallery of images outlining each automaker’s entry, count us among those excited to snap up the whole series.

What makes this project especially interesting, is the ability to see what sort of sportscar concept an automaker creates when there is virtually no whiff of limitation on the design. Some brand stereotypes seem to come through with the Hot Wheels designs, Ford goes for a retro look, Honda draws on its racing heritage, while Chevrolet riffs on the Corvette.

Not sure of the name, but pic 5/7 is the sweetest one.

I love Hot Wheels. And their 1:18 scale model Ferraris aren't too bad either.

I never was into the 1:64 cars. 1:18 for me. I would like to see Hot Wheels do work on the Maserati Merak, Pontiac Firebird Pegasus, and Buick Wildcat III, though.
