‘08 NAIAS: Fisker Introduces the Karma Luxury Plug-In Hybrid
Fisker Automotive, a green American car company had some big news to share from its small display at the North American International Auto Show. The Karma, Fisker’s first vehicle, will make its way into production in the fourth quarter of 2009, with annual production projected to reach 15,000 cars.
This four-door luxury sedan is a plug-in hybrid which can run up to fifty miles when the battery is fully charged. More interestingly, a gasoline engine also assists the Karma in sport driving modes, allowing the car to accelerate from zero to 60 miles per hour in under six seconds.

I suppose it stands to reason that as more and more reliable subsystems become commoditized, more and more small companies can compete. Like in software.

A Prius for Patriots. I'd buy one

detroit9000: It seems to cycle where all the big companies get big and bulky, a ton of small companies pop up, the big guys restructure, and they all end up buying each other up again

I was going to question the viability of this project but the numbers seem to make sense:
15k cars per year at $80,000 = $1.2 billion per year
Assume 4 year run = 60k cars = $5 billion total revenue.
Assuming there are no Fisker retirees to provide healthcare for, that subcontractors can build many of the components, that the hybrid system is already developed, and that sales are direct (low distribution costs), and Fisker can probably make money. Plus they could assemble in Detroit and probably get the state to build the factory for them!!!
BTW, styling is gorgeous and it makes sense. I would buy one.

What’s with the b-pillar?

Is this complete original platform or does Fisker have to have a donor vehicle like other models?
What a stunning car. Can't wait for production Models.

I thought your bigoted-ass had gone away, sorry to see you back.
The fact is Fisker is an English firm, and many of its subsystems will be foreign made. So much for patriotism.

I also doubt you could afford one.

metal air intakes..unpainted, or non baked paint, and plastic intakes. I guess it boils down to something nasa would use..and baked on high temp nonconductive, or one way giveaway conductive something or other. titanium high grade something…baked paint or stiff enough plastic. smooth in ribbed out.

Fabulous! I hope Fisker can pull this off, but, given past history of small manufacturers, I'm not going to get my hopes up. They should probably charge more, at this price point, people who can afford 80k can swing 90k.
