‘08 Chicago: GMC Revives the Muscle Truck with Denali XT Concept

GMC Denali XT Concept

We know the upcoming Pontiac G8 ST may be the closest thing to a reborn Chevrolet El Camino, but we can't help drawing ties to the 'ute whenever we look at GMC's concept for the Chicago auto show, the Denali XT. Or if not the El Camino, at least some GMC-badged version of it. Sprint, Caballero; you make the call.

No, there aren't any styling cues that trip our memories into a retro-hazed flashback, but you try looking at this four-door unibody pickup without seeing muscle. The flared haunches, high cowl, chopped roof and short windows all suggest plenty of power, all of which is channeled through the rear wheels - measuring in at 23 inches, by the way.

A 4.9-liter V-8 sits underhood, sporting cylinder deactivation technology and the capability to run on E85 grade ethanol. That's smaller than the traditional 5.3-liter small block found in GM's current pickups, but it doesn't seem any less capable - estimated power ratings lie at around 326 horsepower. Further helping to improve fuel economy, GM fitted the XT with it's two-mode hybrid system, allowing the ute to run solely on electricity in low-speed situations.

Ecological muscle is an interesting idea, but the main premise behind the XT is to offer pickup practicality in a smaller package. To do this, the Denali XT sports a 55-inch long cargo bed out back. Measuring 47.5-inches wide, the bed isn't interrupted by wheel wells or shock towers, adding to its practicality. Should the length prove to be too short, a Midgate allows longer items to extend into the interior. Total payload capacity is rated at 1100 pounds, while the Denali XT supposedly can tow up to 3500 pounds.

Will we see the XT enter production? Who knows. Although Holden led development on the concept (making us think it could ride on a production Commodore chassis) and CAFE ratings will force the development of smaller trucks, a lot depends on public opinion. What say you - does the Denali XT offer the right blend of performance and practicality for your tastes, or should GMC head back to the drawing boards? Let us know in the comments section below.

GMC RELEASE

GMC DENALI XT HYBRID CONCEPT TRUCK DELIVERS 50-PERCENT FUEL ECONOMY IMPROVEMENT
• New, robust design form serves as a test well for GMC’s future design direction
• First combination of GM’s two-mode hybrid system with E85 ethanol-capable engine
• Height-adjustable suspension and cargo space-enhancing Midgate®

CHICAGO – GMC unveiled the Denali XT concept at the 2008 Chicago Auto Show. It offers a 50-percent increase in combined fuel economy over comparable small pickup trucks when running on gasoline, and it incorporates a new, muscular form in a performance-styled, hybrid sport-utility truck (SUT).

The Denali XT has a unibody architecture and rear-wheel drive, enabling its distinctive design and efficient performance. It builds on the equity of the Denali line and its reputation for advanced engineering and refinement, including the first combination of GM’s two-mode hybrid system with an E85 ethanol-capable engine. Denali XT’s new, more efficient 4.9L version of GM’s small-block V-8 features fuel-saving technologies such as direct-injection technology and Active Fuel Management.

The engine is matched with GM’s unique two-mode hybrid propulsion system, giving the powerful SUT exceptional fuel economy and uncompromising capability – including all-electric drive at low speeds. It is a powertrain combination that makes the Denali XT perfectly suited to a variety of active lifestyle activities, such as hauling skis and snowboards to the mountain or towing a sport jet boat to the lake.

“Like all GMCs, the Denali XT is functional and capable, but it blends those traits with a more efficient, sporty driving experience,

I love this concept, a fuel efficient alternative to a full sized truck, that is also fuel efficient with a pretty powerful engine, and some people may hate it, but personally I love the futuristic macho look

Reilly

I suppose this is what the SSR should have been.

Cicero

I could only hope if something like this goes into production, they add the 4.5 liter diesel

dante

Looks pretty cool, but from the driver's seat, what's the closest point ahead of the grille that you can see? 30 feet? I've been in aircraft with lower cowls.

Jonathan Fung

I suppose this is what trucks will look like in the future.

Soupie

who new the Honda Ridgeline would be so influential?

Cicero

Soupie, the Aussie utes on which this is based have been around much longer then that Honda product

It looks like a sedan with a large trunk. Oh, wait a minute, that's what it is! Except for that large hole in the trunk lid, this is a 40s and early 50s 4 door sedan in proportion and design. I think there is a market for that kind of retro style.

mbslrm

It reminds me of the Honda Ridgeline. But it ACTUALLY looks nice.

I think I just threw up in my mouth a little bit. I've seen uglier vehicles, but the bad part is IF this truck goes into production, it will most likely look worse. As in no 23 inch wheels(maybe 20's at best) and I'm betting the headlights and/or front fascia will be changed for production models. Just don't understand the concept of a heavy truck that most won't ever haul anything in, and it's supposed to be "sporty".....A combination of useless if you ask me. A vette may only have two seats, but at least it's pure and knows what it's bred for.

Striking design? 'yes' Practical? 'maybe' Economy in operation? 'hopefully' Expensive? 'You bet!' I just test drove and priced a GMC Canyon crew cab. Well equipped it pushed the upper $20s. No E85 or diesel option. Not too shabby, but the current Nissan Frontier is better hands down at a better price. I can only imagine what a similar vehicle like this concept would cost. If the market accepts these Xover/hybrids down the road, you know who will make it affordable for the masses. My guess it will not be any of the Big 3. The Japanese and Koreans are here and the Chinese and Indians are coming...they are all masters at taking our good ideas and beating us in the marketplace.

I was hoping the Denali XT would more like the Holden Ute. I like the concept, but not this design. Hopefully GM will clean up the final design before this goes on sale.

I see the Ridgeline cue in there, too. That's not an insult. The Honda is a well-made mid-sizer, easily the best in the market. The Denali XT has a lot of potential as long as GM keeps it uniquely GMC. GMC is seen as a Chevy twin, so an exclusive and interesting product would help it out. GM has done a fine job with the Sierra and the Yukon; I expect even better from this concept. I don't know what it is about GM's latest concept trucks, but this and that last Hummer have me excited.

Or maybe it's seeing the Patriots crushed.

Ridgeline influence? If I recall Chevrolet made the Avalanche many years ago - the Ridgeline is a cheap wannabe....... the SSR comment is right on - this takes that design to the next level.

Show the 2dr pontiac already.

THIS STATEMENT FROM THE ARTICLE ABOVE SAYS IT ALL:

you try looking at this four-door unibody pickup without seeing muscle.

This is a sweet ride...I know they need to change somethings...but keep the curves and muscle stance.

I sure hope they make this vehicle and soon.

It would be cool if they added the new duramax diesel.
