Having recently tested BMW’s new M3 Coupe and M3 Sedan, we were excited to get some more time in BMW’s M-series of cars. This time around, we were provided with a M6 Coupe, boasting a 500-horsepower V-10 engine and looks that stopped many people dead in their tracks. With an as-tested price of just over $111,000, however, we can think of some better alternatives on how to spend a budget that big.

Now that GM has given a hybrid powertrain to the new-for-2008 Malibu, Chevrolet’s mid-size runner has a lot more to bring to the table and offers a real stiff competition for the Toyota Camry. We like the Malibu’s styling and interior refinement, but after a week in our test fleet, we’re having doubts about the Chevrolet competing with the likes of Toyota’s Hybrid Synergy Drive.

We’ve just taken delivery of a spanking new Volvo C30 hatch and thought that the stylish Swede would be the perfect subject for this week’s Ask It segment. It’ll be hard to argue with the small Volvo’s looks as we think the car is one of the prettiest hatchbacks on sale today, but questions about the ultimate functionality of the design might not go amiss. Let us know what you ponder when you hear “C30”, in comments.

Our thoughts on the 2008 Dodge Charger R/T AWD are pretty unanimous. We are big fans of the 340-horsepower Hemi V-8 under the hood but the fun starts to diminish when the road begins to curve. As for interior refinement, our test car was loaded up with all of the bells and whistles anyone could want, but the build quality and materials used just aren’t as nice as something we could get from Europe or Japan.

A technological masterpiece, the 2008 Audi A5 impressed us during its week-long stay in our test fleet. We have praise for the LED headlamps, well-appointed interior, and even Audi’s MMI interface. Our A5 was equipped with the 3.2-liter V-6 matched with Quattro all-wheel-drive. It’s a sweet setup, but would we have it over a 3-series? We’re still trying to decide.

A few of our staff members aren’t too smitten with the styling of the new Toyota Matrix, but once we all got time behind the wheel, it didn’t matter. We agree that this car has plenty of power and passengers praised the Matrix’s comfortable interior, as well.

When this red devil arrived in our test fleet, we knew we’d be in for a good week. Having recently tested an M3 Sedan, we were eager to spend more time with BMW’s 414-horsepower V-8 bomber, and boy, did we enjoy it.

After spending time in the Hyundai Veracruz, many of our staffers are reminded of crossovers like the Ford Edge, Nissan Murano, Toyota Highlander, and Lexus RX. While all of these CUVs are just as capable as our Veracruz, we agree that if given the choice, we’d take the Hyundai.

WINDING ROAD readers seemed especially keen to know, with good reason, how our 2008 BMW M3 sedan compared dynamically to its M3 coupe stable mate. While that question is certainly a valid one, it’s a bit difficult to answer without doing a head-to-head comparison (our M3 coupe arrives when the sedan leaves, unfortunately), though many of the questions are touched on in our own Matt Davis’s excellent review of the sedan.
We can say that the M3 proved to be perfectly tractable while in low-speed traffic and offered strong acceleration in pretty much every gear, though the addictive engine sound high in the rev range often left us choosing the lowest ratio. Editor-In-Chief Chris Paukert averaged about 16 mpg in spirited driving, mostly on freeways, but claims 10-12 mpg (or even single digits) would be easily possible if the driver was given to speeding around town.
Click on the video above for a few more answers to reader questions about the M3 sedan and make sure to check back this Friday, when we post our next Ask It choice.
