Despite recent rumors that the Maybach brand may be a target for closure by parent company Mercedes-Benz, and the fact of its rather improbable appeal, a production version of the four-door convertible Maybach Landaulet limousine is on its way.
The car made its debut at the 2008 Detroit Auto Show as a possible target for the most conspicuous of consumers. Now Hans-Dieter Multhaupt, vice president of program management for Maybach, says that the auto will be offered for sale in the U.S. starting in December of this year. The Landaulet will also carry a price tag of a whopping $1.35 million.

The 2008 North American International Auto Show is full of new cars, some of which can only be afforded by people with extra large wallets. Automakers like Rolls-Royce, Lamborghini, and Ferrari ensure that their top-dollar automobiles are displayed under only the best of lighting and in the plushest surroundings. In many cases, special permission has to be granted in order for journalists to get up close and personal with these top-shelf vehicles.

This enormous concept car is based on a Maybach 62S, but half the roof is retractable. Certainly designed for the sheik who has everything but a new Maybach Landaulet, this opulent auto will likely be produced in a limited edition to the tune of 20 units.
Maybach decked out the back half of the Landaulet with white leather, presumably to keep the temperature down in that hot Middle Eastern sun, and left the driver’s quarters in black leather. We particularly enjoy the back seats, which look like an awesome place to enjoy the sun while cruising at warp speed.

We’re not normally in the habit of buying spy shots of vehicles that are almost completely hidden from view, but the unusual length and partially visible features of this prototype are so bizarre that we just couldn’t help ourselves.
According to our friends at KGP Photography, they believe this is a test mule for the Mercedes-Benz SLC super coupe. Our snappers staked out the Penske truck and the mule for 12 hours in hopes of landing some clean shots, but only managed to come away with these.
KGP indicates that the team of engineers swarming over the prototype were AMG employees, and the mule’s companions included a collection of S-class, C-class (as shown) and G-class vehicles.
The severely cab-backwards tester shown above makes use of some Dodge Viper body panels (presumably sourced before the DaimlerChrysler split), and although it doesn’t really look like it, our spotters say that the car’s wheelbase is close to that of the SLR (they were able to sneak over to the vehicle in the dark of night and measure it at 106-inches!).
Given its severe cab backward proportions, we can’t help but wonder if this isn’t an SLC as indicated, and perhaps something a bit more exotic… perhaps the long-rumored Maybach coupe? (think: Maybach Exelero). After all, this vehicle looks markedly different from what was believed to be an SL-based SLC mule which Hans Lehmann’s Hidden Image captured for us back in June.
In any case, we hope to bring you better (uncovered) shots of the mule in motion tomorrow, but for now, click on the thumbnails below to launch a high-resolution gallery, or on the jump below for KGP’s own thoughts.

It’s no secret that DaimlerChrysler’s plutocrat outpost, Maybach, has been beset by slow sales and so-so reviews since the brand first came (back) online. Despite shifting just 280 of the big limos last year, the brand appears set to trudge forward with an expanded range of models.
According to CAR Magazine, the 57 and 62 sedans currently on sale will form the basis for a landaulet variant, with a roofless passenger compartment incorporating a power-actuated canvas top. About 25-50 of these are planned.
Additionally, plans are apparently afoot to take the Mercedes-Benz GL SUV and trim it out with Maybachian fittings, resulting in about 1500 units. Changes would include a new grille, lights, bumpers, and a loaded-up interior with the rear lounger-chairs that are already available in the company’s sedans.
Will DCX really build Maybachs in Tuscaloosa? We’ll see.
