Toyota Gaining in Full-Size Pickup Market

06_08tundrasport1.jpg

Everything is bigger in Texas, we know that. The Lone Star State loves the full-size pickup, we know that too. But, they drive Toyotas? That’s a surprise.

Bloomberg reports that the Japanese automaker is winning the hearts of Texas truck lovers with the Tundra taking a 79 percent spike in the market share while the American competitors saw a 5 percent loss. And, with one out of every seven full-size pickup deliveries going to Texas, Toyota’s gaining on an already battered Big Three.

Toyota invested $1.28 billion in 2006 to open a San Antonio assembly plant and with national Tundra sales up 58 percent, there’s no apparent signs of Toyota’s market share getting smaller anytime soon.

Weird, I am from Texas, and all I see are Fords, then Chevys, and then to a lesser extent Dodge with a smattering of Toyotas

Rex

I see a lot of Tundras in Los Angeles.

it sounds like the Toyota Tundra made some end roads in Texas but it still didn't meet its overall goal.

Better Luck in 08 Toyota.

Mena

Rex,
The goal is to take marketshare from the domestics. They've got plenty of time there since the former Big 3 are going down down down and Toyota is going up up up.

Bryce

Yeah, why would anyone want to but a reliable domestic when they can buy a Tundra that gets a cracked tailgate, break camshafts, driveshaft issues, not to mention that the GM 5.3 liter V8 gets better milage

The 79% spike looks good as a percentage, but that number only looks high because of the very low sales from the pervious year. If you look at the actual number of vehicles sold, the Tundra is not selling as well as even Toyota had hoped.
Bryce is correct as well... the Tundra has had many more quality problems then when either Ford or GM launched their redesigned pick up trucks. Ford is launching it's next F-150 in 2009 and comparing recent Ford launches (Fusion, Edge, etc. at the top of their class in J.D. Power) to Toyota's recent efforts (Tundra and Camry being removed from Consumer Reports recommended list due to quality issues)......

Mena

"Tundra that gets a cracked tailgate, break camshafts, driveshaft issues"

Oh because the Big 3 have NEVER had problems with any of their trucks. Right!

Mark

All hail Toyota. Lots of cash on the Tundra's ugly hood is a good way to buy market share.

mbslrm

The 79 % sales increase is skewed. They were selling very little before, and now they are selling a little bit more. I would like to see a units sold figure and Toyota's sales goal for 2007. Doesn't look good anymore now, does it....

Bryce

MENA, Toyota has had more issues in a few months then most truck makers have in a few years of model life, oh wait, you only want to have the Japanese take over the American car market, so you do not care about facts

Jesda

The goal is to make a profit.
