The third-generation 2009 Forester is a total re-design of the award-winning crossover utility vehicle (CUV). The 2009 Forester builds upon its predecessor’s reputation as an icon of safety, dependability and versatility. The new-generation 2009 model projects a bolder, more SUV-like design and making a major leap in safety technology, comfort, refinement and driving dynamics.

As with all Subaru models, the 2009 Forester comes equipped as standard with Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive. An all-new platform featuring a 3.6-inch longer wheelbase (now 103.0 inches) and double-wishbone rear suspension improves crash-worthiness and at the same time provides crisper handling, a quieter ride and increased interior space and cargo room. The 2009 Forester once again blends positive SUV attributes including a high seating point and interior versatility with passenger car comfort, handling and fuel efficiency.

All Forester models for 2009 feature standard side-curtain airbags with a rollover sensor, and the Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC) stability and traction control system is standard on all models for the first time. With the Subaru Dynamic Chassis Control Concept (Subaru DC3), Subaru optimized all elements of the Forester’s chassis to deliver a better balance of ride, handling response, quietness and overall traction performance than offered by competitive vehicles. A comprehensive array of elements contributes to that goal, including the new, high-strength body structure, standard Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, VDC and four-wheel disc ABS brakes with the Brake Assist safety system.

US $1200 less for base, $200 more for premium, $700 less for LL Bean, $800 less for Turbo. I am surprised they didn’t have to lower even more with this boring, indistinct design. The previous one was a step in a wrong direction, this one completely loses Forester’s charm and individuality.

And still no diesel, so fuel efficiency will be just as mediocre as before.

Don’t worry about it hwyhobo, this car isn’t about you or for you.

I agree hwyhobo.. Very boring vehicle indeed. :\

Does anyone else think “Mitsubishi Outlander” every time they first see a picture of the new Forester? The new Forester isn’t unattractive, it just looks too much like the Outlander.

Subaru’s have never been pretty so I don’t see what the problem is. If you want pretty, buy something with an “i” at the end.

Beauty isn’t the issue here. Subaru used to be distinct. It lost it now.

Distinct sells. Indistinct bores.

I can’t think of any compact SUV that can be called attractive. I would rather have boring than ugly like the CRV. Specs look good and fuel economy is average in the pack. Overall, I like it and would rather drive this than a Mitsu or Toyota.

A larger company would have added this model into its lineup to slot between the old (much more car/wagon-like) Forester and the Tribeca.

Up until this design, the Forester had its own unique niche — now they will need to compete with the RAV-4, Outlander, CRV, Escape, etc. Obviously a very crowded market segment.

Good luck, Subaru!

this new design has answered so many on going space issues for the Forester, that has shyed away many customers. It is also resolved many of the handling and noise complaints. I love the new redesign and think its still looks like a forester, just not so old school, LOVE IT!

I’ve read XT available only with automatic/sport-shift transmission, so does that mean there won’t be a turbo Forester with a manual transmission anymore?
