Start Saving: Rare 1952 GM Futurliner Destined for eBay

GM Futurliner

Now that the 2008 Barrett-Jackson auctions in Scottsdale have passed, we're keeping our eyes out for the next big-ticket item to pass through an auction house. We've found one, but we think it's more of a gargantuan ticket item. Bob Valdez is looking to sell his restored 1952 GM Futurliner on eBay in the coming weeks.

The massive bus-like vehicle, measuring 12 feet tall, eight feet wide, and 33 feet long, is one of 12 vehicles built by GM to transport its Parade of Progress exhibition from coast-to-coast. Originally built in 1940, the Futurliners were re-built in 1952 to eliminate a bubble-dome canopy and to fit the behemoths with 302 cubic-inch I-6 motors from GMC.

GM sold the Futurliners to various parties in 1956; currently, no more than 9 survive, although two are beyond repair. Valdez bought his in the 1980s, and worked hard to restore it to its present shape. Instead of hauling show supplies and displays, Valdez turned the cargo area of his Futurliner into a lounge. The center section sports an art-deco style wet bar, while the rear of the coach has facing benches.

A totally-restored Futurliner passed under the Barrett-Jackson gavel last year, ultimately attaining a selling price of $4 million (without sellers' fees). Although he attempted to sell the big rig on eBay last year, Valdez is hoping the publicity - and pricing - of the auctioned Futurliner helps up the bidding on his. Asking price? Bidding starts at a cool $1 million.

There's something that the interior of the Futureliner lacks. I think it needs a pole dancer.

Actually, I believe the Futureliner sold at Barrett-Jackson in 2006, not 2007.

I like the styling on it.
