In general, you are considered an utter delinquent by all should you drive even one tick over the posted speed limit in Japan during any but the spooky wee hours. The omnipresent police never laugh if you try to be chummy and tell them the throttle got stuck. This is why the very existence of the 473-horsepower Nissan GT-R is so weird. This fifth-generation R35 GT-R is, in our assessment, worthy of hard-core muscle car credibility by the standards of any nation.

The cabin does look nice and a lot of effort has gone into the production of this fast coupe. I am still disappointed in what is, arguably, the least important trait: appearance. The exterior is bland, even compared to a two-door Altima. Some of the unfair complaints I read about the Acura NSX seem valid with the GT-R. The Euro crowd never wanted to accept the NSX, labeling it a high-priced Civ, a soulless machine engineered by a corporation, uninspired in styling, and lacking raw feel in its road manners (something I have no idea in regarding the Nissan).

I haven’t driven the GT-R, and probably never will, but I wonder if a comparison between the GT-R and a Porsche 997 Turbo is akin to the comparison of the Bugatti Veyron and the McLaren F1. The Bugatti was powerful, fast, and hi-tech, but lacked “character” in its driving experience. I am disappointed that, with all the manpower and capital put into the creation of this monster-on-wheels, not enough was done to trim the weight from this car. In that regard, I do see a similarity with the Veyron.
