Relationship Between the Web and Dealerships Growing

Auto sales are increasingly headed toward the virtual world. Everything short of a test drive can be done online these days.

According to Automotive News, some experts predict that the entire sale will be done online within the next five years. However, the internet has substantially depleted the amount of time a customer spends at a dealership – which some believe leads to low sales numbers.

Steve Emery, a consultant to the National Automobile Dealers Association, said, “By the end of the decade, dealers won’t have an Internet department. That will just be how all car deals are done.

I can see the potential for selecting a dealer or dealers as well as perhaps narrowing down car choices on line, but nothing replaces the test drive. I also don't think a dealer is going to commit to a trade in price for your used vehicle without seeing the vehicle in person. When I've gone shopping for cars in the past, I've tried two or three models that IO thought I wanted only to find that the ergonomics were impossible for me to spend more than the length of the test drive behind the wheel of the vehicle. I've even tried some vehicles that never got off the lot because the fit was so bad for me. I have found this to be especially true of cars from Asia that I have tried. I wonder if the Asians have any idea how big a six footer is sometimes? I remember trying to get into a Dodge badged Mitsubishi a few years ago. I got into the car, and realised that there was no way for me to operate the pedals without another knee between my knee and ankle!
