As we are great admirers of smaller cars that pack power intelligently—and we don’t mean the flame-sided Honda Civic with a chip upgrade programmed by an outsourced third party in the Republic of Guinea Bissau—the BMW 135i Coupe should fit neatly into our ideal garage. Our encounter with this latest Bimmer twin-turbo in the western Baltic Sea was a fine opportunity to weigh all of the reasons for bringing this body size and style to the United States.

The reviews for the 135i have been unanimously positive. (That’s an understatement.) Even though the 135i has a pretty high curb weight, I find it to be the most appealing Bimmer on the market. I wouldn’t compare it to the 2002, but I would see a place in comparing it to an E30. Overall, this would be my choice if I was moving up from a Mini.

Let’s see how much it costs when it gets here, and how many of them are optioned up. If one can get the 135i as “basic” car, just like the 2002 was, the 135i will be an awful lot of fun.

But for some reason, I don’t think we’ll see that day….ever. I’ll bet it costs purt near what a 3-series 4-door costs.

Why just the coupe?!?

The 3 door wagon/hatch would be a perfect upmarket replacement for my GTI: good looking, fast and no loss of utility. The coupe fails the 3rd test miserably.

A big part of the definition of a “sporty lifestyle vehicle” is the ability to carry sporting gear!

Bring the hatch and I’m in.

[…] lot about it. Perhaps more confusing yet, we happened to find the ring on both the 2008 128i and 135i coupes and the 2009 convertible model. Seeing as the convertible should arrive at dealers in the later […]
