Japan Report: Lexus IS-F to Battle Base Nissan GT-R in Price
Lexus’ announcement that the new IS-F sports sedan will go on sale in Japan for ¥7.66 million (call it $65,200 or thereabouts) has already sparked an interesting comparison.
In late September, Nissan said that “prices in Japan for the Nissan GT-R will start from around ¥7.8 million.

whats with the cheap looking "Cobalt-style" break lights and non-driverside gas cap on the GT-R? Those are big minuses to me.

Quad circular tail lights go way back on the Skylines. They are keeping with tradition. I prefer the R34 tail lights though, THAT was perfection.

For that particular car, the gas cap IS on the driver's side. Your right though, probably won't change it for America.

Ok, so you are not going to buy a technical marvel because the gas cap is on the wrong side. That doesn't make sense to me. And yeah the skylines have had the circular lights in the back for almost 30 years, so if anything, the GM ripped off Nissan for that design.

if i am gonna spend 70k on a car, I wouldn't choose any of these two. but if someone is gonna give me one of them and then i will choose the GT-R. simply because the lexus looks ugly, less power and (as i believe) is not gonna handle as good as the GT-R.

The quad circular tail lights on the Cobalt go back to a little-known GM product called the 1963 C2 Corvette.
The Skyline has also traditionally had quad circular tail lights, from at least 1968. I'm not an expert on classic JDM cars though, so it may be earlier than that.
As painful as walking three feet around to the other side of the car to fill it up with gas can be, it really hasn't hurt the sales of every single German luxury car manufacturer in the US.

Clint:
The taillamps went back earlier--I believe the 1961 C1.

I hope BMW releases a 135ix to embarrass both of these cars!

I hate driver's side gas fillers. Those lanes are usually more backed up. Now that the most important design element of a car is settled, I don't see much hope for the Lexus. Neither are lookers, but the GT-R seems to have something underneath, plus the name (sort of, since they dropped the 'Skyline' part).

i really dont think these cars compete
a coupe isf would compete

todd,
the 135ix is sort of heavy (3200 lb) comes with 300 hp. which means it is not gonna embarrass any of these cars (at least not the gtr) as they have better power to weight ratio. in addition these two cars are supposed to be prepared for racing unlike the 135ix which is made to be a daily commuter's car.
note: i assumed that the gtr us gonna be around 3800 lb (which might not be the case) when doing the power to weight calculations.

Chris Bangle of BMW found his master. This Lexus IS-F is even uglier than the Bimmers he created. It reminds me of an aging Hollywood star who spent too many hours in the cosmetic surgeon's office. Yuck.
Maybe IS-F is really an abbreviation. . .

If I had that money, I'd have to take the Lexus. I mean the Skyline is amazing, but the Lexus is a Lexus...and I've always wanted an IS.
