black, silver, and white compromise 75% of sales? really?
Once upon a time and not so long ago, it seemed that every other car in Japan was painted white. For a whole number of reasons, the Japanese like white, big time. Perhaps it has something to do with the inherent goodness of its properties.
White is a safe, bright, neutral color and it’s easy to match if you get a dent. “You can go to a funeral in a white car,” as the saying goes in Japan. It fits every social situation, causing no friction along way, and because of all that it’s been the longtime resale number one.
White was massive in Japan in the ‘80s and early ‘90s, especially at Toyota, but a recent survey reveals how the king has lost its crown. A survey by Gulliver International, a major used car group in Japan, covering 1.34 million vehicles sold between 2000 and 2006, shows that…black is the new white.
Well, almost. In 2006, black represented 27 per cent of sales, Gulliver said, just a whisker behind white at 28 per cent. Reds and blues accounted for 21 per cent (down from 47 per cent in 1995). In the modern era, the Gulliver number crunchers calculated that black, silver and white represent 75 per cent of sales.
So give credit to Mazda, for one, for bucking the trend by making metallic green the theme color for the rated new Mazda2 (known as the Demio in Japan). Smart move?

Believe it or not I find that white is actually easier to keep clean. Most people think the opposite, but white shows dirt much less than dark-colored cars. Unless it is obviously covered with mud, you have to get up close to tell that a white car is dusty. My car is parked outdoors 100% of the time, so I made sure to get white.
PS–Sharkey, I own a white Focus…it gets dirty pretty easily and it shows.
I must go with Sharkey on this one…. Had a white VW Golf… very easy to keep clean… unlike my present car which is black
White just looks too plain. Makes a beautiful car look bland.
Yep, had a white subaru, had to be just filthy to show the dirt, though once you washed it, you could tell the differnce.
Black may be a curse to clean, but it always looks good.
I always thought a white car made it look like you were driving a rental.
They got bored with it and they shifted
I work at a car lot. White is usually easier to keep clean, but then again pearl white is even easier because it’s not a full white so the dirt doesn’t make it look so dirty.
Mena, beautiful cars will look beautiful in any colour. A pure colour such as white will show the beautiful lines and features. For example, Astons look beautiful in any colour, especially white.
white is VERY boring. the only cases in which i would get a white car would be a car designed to be elegant above all else, or if i wanted a sleeper. why someone would get a modern mid-level car in milk white is beyond me. it just kind of says “look at me, i put no thought into this purchase!”
I prefer white or silver because they are way less maintenance. I wash it about once a month. Couldn’t do that when I had my black truck.
I had only black cars, but now, talking about Mazda… I`ve puchased a white Mazda 3. With this car the white color is fantastic when u get the time to buy it a pair of black rims and a dark window tin, then the white really pops.
