Anyone who feels cozy in a wide-open car on a sunny winter’s day is, nine times out of ten, someone we would like to get to know. Heat blows from the dash, perhaps there is even the luxury of heated seats, the bracing wind dances around, and the clear sound of the powertrain sings from the tailpipes and echoes off the surrounding landscape.
This style of cool-weather sports car driving is an ideal time for inner reflection on the past year, what lies ahead, relationships, and several other mushy subjects that take on clarity as the miles pass. Afterward we have a glow of satisfaction, since we took the time to enjoy driving in a way that very few people find sensible.

Reading Matt Davis’s piece on cruising through the Spanish orchard roads gives me thanks that I live in California. The Golden State is the most populous in our Union and it has rampant development, but there are still many beautiful sights here. Central California is remains covered by orange groves. The warm coastal climate is similar to what you’d find in the Mediterranean. The North is graced with the Napa Valley groves. Southern California has beautiful sites from its Spanish past from San Diego to San Juan Capistrano and up to Santa Barbara. When I had my Alfa Romeo, I could enjoy the liberty of the open air along the Pacific Coast Highway–when the Alfa worked, that is.
There is no question the 128i will be pricey at around $34,000; this doesn’t dissuade me from wanting one. The Mini is more along the lines of my budget (if I wanted a new car, that is), but the 125i is a reasonable base ragtop. The test numbers are respectable, the 128i still measures smaller than the 328i, and it is thousands less than its larger kin. The 6 spd. manual shifter sounds wonderful. I wish I could say I have used it. Maybe in the near future I’ll have that benefit.
