GM to Introduce 16 Hybrids by 2012

General Motors doesn’t want to miss the hype train. It too has now announced that it will have an entire fleet of hybrids. Ok, it didn’t. But, GM will have 16 hybrid models on the market by 2012, CEO Rick Wagoner told reporters at the Geneva Motor Show.

The models will be powered by two different hybrid systems. One is designed for the rear-wheel and all-wheel-drive vehicles (Chevy Tahoe). The other is for the front-wheel-drive vehicles (Saturn Vue).

Wagoner said that GM plans to introduce one hybrid model, on average, every four months until 2012. GM currently offers four hybrid models – the Chevy Tahoe, Chevy Malibu, Saturn Vue, and Saturn Aura.

Malibu Hybrid is a joke (2 mpg gain). If that's what GM means by 16 hybrids, then GM is still in denial and believes you can con all the people all the time.

Ducati Minor

GM's front-drive "mild-hybrids" haven't inspired any confidence from me or the green tree-hugging community.

Steve

I can't quite say that the Malibu Hybrid is a joke... The power of the 6 cylinder with better efficiency than the 4 cylinder. That's not a bad deal, right?

john

@ hwyhobo,
2mpg is like, what, a 10% increase. Now take $3.45 a gallon and subtract 10%. $3.11 sounds pretty attractive to me. But then if 2mpg is a joke then $3.11 is a joke.

Cicero

More diesels darn it, better milage, low end torque and clean burning

stu

As if I even needed to tell you people this:

Hybrids release more smug into the atmosphere then any other vehicles available on the market today.

Also, if you read some of what Lutz was saying in an interview a few weeks ago, the guy could care less about global warming. It's all about trying to decrese North America's reliance on foreign oil. (1 or 2 mpgs at a time)

Ducati Minor

Cic, I love you but the diesel cries are getting older than my undies.

Cicero

Sorry Ducati, how about if I advocate diesel hybirds, like that VW concept in Geneva?

Mena

The second gen mild hybrid's from GM are claiming a 20% increase in mpg.

What are you talking about? Here are the specs for the most basic of the basic 4 cyl 2008 Malibu:

Base Number of Cylinders: 4
Base Engine Size: 2.4 liters
Base Engine Type: Inline 4
Horsepower: 169 hp
Torque: 160 ft-lbs
Fuel Tank Capacity: 16 gal.
EPA Mileage Estimates: (City/Highway)
Automatic: : 22 mpg / 30 mpg
Range in Miles: (City/Highway)
Automatic: 352 mi. / 480 mi

And here is the 2008 Malibu hybrid:

Base Number of Cylinders: 4
Base Engine Size: 2.4 liters
Base Engine Type: Inline 4
Horsepower: 164 hp
Torque: 159 ft-lbs
Fuel Tank Capacity: 16 gal.
EPA Mileage Estimates: (City/Highway)
Automatic: : 24 mpg / 32 mpg
Range in Miles: (City/Highway)
Automatic: 384 mi. / 512 mi

No, on average it's 8%. Yes, 2 mpg is a joke when you have to pay US $3K premium for that. You would have to drive 300,000 miles before you would recoup that price difference. Sorry, no way, no how does this make sense.

Cicero

Mena, you sure about that 20% figure, I heard it was closer to 40, but you could be right, just want to be sure

Mena

Cicero, positive it was 20%.

Cicero

Thanks Mena, I just wanted to be clear since I heard otherwise, I will trust you on this

"Sorry Ducati, how about if I advocate diesel hybirds, like that VW concept in Geneva?"

I don't know about "hybirds." I believe those are in Indonesia and are endangered.

As for the Malibu Hybrid, what is the performance boost from the car? The gas-electric engine offers only a mild increase from the EPA number listed; are the street numbers a hike over the V-6? In that case, maybe spending $2,000 over the base model isn't all that bad.
