Motorists might be facing what is being called a “nightmarish” spring for fuel prices, with the average price of gasoline averaging a potential $3.75 per gallon across the U.S.

Despite some reports earlier this month that the price of oil could be coming down, crude oil prices continue to stay high. Energy analysts at Oppenheimer & Co. say that gas prices will set new records and that, “there is no question it will be much higher than last year.”

Americans should plan on paying about 65 cents more per gallon of gas than they did last year at this time. California residents look to be the hardest hit, where $4 per gallon prices could soon be the norm.

This week’s Energy Department survey of service stations found that the average pump price was $2.98 nationally, up from $2.34 during the same period last year. That jump is nothing when compared to the year-by-year averages of crude oil, where the price per barrel has gone from an average of $36.98 in 2004, to $72 this year. Next year’s average is projected to jump again, possibly reaching $85 per barrel.

It isn’t going to get any better if we invade Iran or stay in Iraq & Afghanistan longer.

I never knew the Taliban had plans on cutting crude oil prices. Wow, you’re such a genius.
