Forbes Picks the 14 Most Overpriced Vehicles
By using a formula that takes into account market price vs. sticker price, owner satisfaction, residuals, and overall appeal, Forbes has created a list of the 15 most overpriced vehicles on sale today. Well, 14 really, for some reason the Forbes website is keeping the last motor a secret.
The Forbes list is a who’s who of automobiles that have been, and will probably continue to, sit on dealer lots for far too long. Made up almost entirely of pickups and SUVs (the list has one sedan and one minivan), this group of vehicles was largely conceived of a few years ago when automakers thought that they just couldn’t charge enough for their large, thirsty options.
(Click on the thumbnails below to peruse a gallery of the most overpriced vehicles on sale.)
The dubious number one spot goes to the Dodge Ram 2WD Laramie MegaCab, which at $37,105 is overpriced in Forbes’ formula by $7,158. The ancient Mercury Grand Marquis comes in at number two, overpriced by a whopping $6,480. Nissan’s Quest SE minivan has the distinction of being one of only two foreign entries (though the Mazda B-series pickup is so close to Ford’s Ranger that it hardly counts), and is over by $3,441.
The Forbes article makes the interesting point that the thing that most of these vehicles have in common, is that manufacturers are either too set in their ways, or too proud to actually change the sticker price, choosing instead to offer discounts that ultimately hurt the residual value and perception of the vehicle. It would also stand to reason that owner satisfaction aside; this list might serve as a good guide to some of the best three-year-old used values in the country today. 2004 Grand Marquis anyone?

I'm not suprised. I have been saying that vehicles are overpriced for years.

How did the XLR-V not make it on there with its five figure incentives and discounts.

I would have thought the Lincoln Town Car would have been picked over the Grand Marquis. It's the same basic car and costs nearly twice as much.

I always thought the Marq and the Vic were bargains

So the article does not really look at what the vehicle sells for, but at MSRP only? That doesn't make any sense. WTH buys for MSRP? Editors at Forbes? And then they get together and whine how much they overpaid?

It's just more jejune content, designed to generate pageviews and nothing more. Forbes is quite skilled at that.

I wouldn't argue that their choices don't belong on the list, I just question why there is nothing on the list with a price point above $100k. I gues you automatically join Forbe's "best buy" list if you get your price far enough into the stratosphere!

All U.S. brand trucks except for one U.S. brand car.
