We told you in the past weeks about General Motors’ intention of merging brands together under one dealership roof. GM denied any announcement to act on the dealership plan. Well, GM CEO Rick Wagoner recently showed up at a new Henry Brown Buick-Pontiac-GMC store in Gilbert, Arizona, to see one for himself.

Wagoner pointed out that the new dealership is the first in Arizona to encompass the GM new dealership strategy – hence the brand consolidation. He said 40 other dealerships nationwide have installed the brand consolidation strategy – called “GM Collections” with about 100 more to come.

No word on what other brands will consolidate under the same roof, but check back for more details in the future.

Ford tried this approach ten or 15 years ago, creating super dealers. Sill-Terhar Ford in Broomfield, CO, is one of them. They bought the rights to Ford, Aston Martin, Jaguar, Volvo, Mazda, Lincoln and Mercury. It was before Land Rover was purchased, and there was a different Land Rover dealer nearby, so they never got that marque. They recently added Rolls Royce.

It’s weird now, seeing Ford sell off the brands.

The dealership has been in the same family for about 50 years, and they take customer service very seriously. I believe they just got their 13th President’s Award for customer satisfaction. I’ve bought half a dozen Ford trucks from them in the last 22 years, and they’ve been superb.

They were superb before they became a multi-marque dealer. They just extended the business model to the other brands. I don’t think the concept of putting the three GM brands in one dealership will increase sales for GM. It may turn out to have economies of scale for those dealers, but they have to fear that the combination of three franchises will be worth less than three single franchises, and that it augurs poorly for the future of those three brands.

A dealership that sells Buick Pontiac and GMC under one roof is news? Uh, have you driven through a small town in the last 10 years?

I am with Paul on this one, I have seen those for awhile now even in a large city like Dallas, those kind of dealerships are not new

Buick & Pontiac under one roof is pretty common, and GMC is never in a stand alone dealership unless it is a commercial truck dealership with nothing as small as a pick up or suv on the lot.
