2008 Ford Mustang Bullitt Test Drive

The Bullitt is arguably the best new Mustang offshoot to come along so far. The other candidate would be the Shelby GT500, but the Shelby is much more heavily breathed upon and the immutable law of hot-rodding has had its effect, id est: “Speed Costs Money: How Fast Do You Want To Go?

Of all the Mustang models that have flooded showrooms in the past three years, the Bullitt Edition looks like the best. It isn't the fastest, most powerful, or best-handling; but it's, aesthetically, a bare package focused on power more than image. I believe the old '68 GT390 weighed over 3,600 lbs. The new 'Stang's lighter engine, smoother gearbox, and lower weight are steps in progress we can all agree on. For some odd reason, I really like this car. I hate the idea of whoring a past icon to make extra dough, but the simplicity for the car just arouses me. The plain 4.6 L V-8, 5 spd. shifter, fancy-less dash, and blacked out grill just call to me in a way no Ford has before it.

A much better deal than those $36K Shelby GTs piling up on dealer lots. One will confess that, twenty years from now, those Shelbys will make for interesting articles in muscle car magazines. Who knows? Maybe there will be a nosedive in speed in the 2020s, leaving up to fondly remember these times as an unappreciated horsepower revival. If the mid-1960s to early '70s was the Pax Mechanica, we could be in the Muscle Car Renaissance.
