The 2008 Cadillac CTS has outscored the BMW 328i and Mercedes-Benz C300 in Consumer Reports‘ ratings. Among the upscale sports sedan field, the CTS was the only model to receive a rating of “Excellent”.

David Champion, Consumer Reports’ senior director of automotive testing, said, “The Cadillac CTS now competes toe-to-toe with some of the best German and Japanese sport sedans. There are more safety features and interior amenities in the new model. Fit and finish is greatly improved, and the interior is much more pleasant than in the previous generation.”

The Cadillac CTS also won Motor Trend’s “Car of the Year” award.

I love the new CTS and the upcoming CTS-V and CTS coupe, and even though some people may not like it, I know the wagon version will be great. I know the STS/DTS replacment will be amazing and the rwd replacment for the BLS, Caddy will be able to take on the world.

The CTS has made a big splash, but the comparison tests I read have had the CTS wrestling with the BMW Three and falling behind the Infiniti G35, but safely ahead of Mercedes-Benz and Lexus. Lincoln, Acura, and Audi weren’t even brought in. The comparos were in comparison to sportiness, where the CTS’s heavier weight gave it a disadvantage; but the words were grand.

“the CTS’s heavier weight gave it a disadvantage”

Isn’t it really closer in size to a BMW 5-series, though? I think it’s pretty impressive to see a car that’s priced at a level that beats the 3-series, that performs well enough in comparison that the auto media is pretty evenly split on preference, and that’s closer to the 5-series come out of Detroit, let alone with a Cadillac badge on it.

I don’t have money to spend on anything in that class, but I know that the 3-series is a snug fit for my 6′5″ frame, and the G35 just doesn’t move me (although my aunt bought one last spring right after they came out). I could easily pull the trigger on the CTS with the direct-injection motor and auto gearbox, which Cadillac would love to hear from a mid-30s male buyer.

Too bad I’m mostly broke. :(

Cadillac is doing a great job indead. having a global car is an indicator that the car is good. yes, the new CTS is larger than the BMW 3, and closer in size to the BMW 5. for me, the car doesn’t really have to be the fastest in the market. the CTS has a great sporty attitude, great interior and exterior quality and nice distinctive design. now (in my standards), the car only need to prove that it is reliable, and if it is, i will call the car a winner.

Yes, the CTS is about the size of the 5 series, and the upcoming rwd replacment for the BLS will be the size of the 3 series on the Alpha platform

Did anyone else look at the body and immediately think, “They don’t know what they’re doing.”?

Thank god Consumer Reports gave the CTS a thumbs up. Now that I know real enthusiasts liked it I’ll consider it for myself.

Side note - CR also ranked the Acura TL ahead of the CTS and the G35. The G35 I might believe, but the TL? Kind of shows how much faith to put in their tests.

Greg,

To answer your question, no. No one else does that.

Well, I have to hand it to Caddy on this one… they excited Consumer Reports. Yawn. I applaud the fact that the Caddy is high in CR’s reviews but still… wouldn’t a BMW excite you more? Sure it may break down more often than a Toyota but who wants to drive an appliance, right? Mercedes new C-Class is amazing to drive, and it will probably drive 300K miles or more. By then, all but the most prized CTS will be rusting in a junk yard. Now, remember that I drive a Saab which is another car that is more of an emotional and irrational choice so I am totally biased.

Cicero February 4th, 2008 7:37 PM Link

You do remember that Saab is owned by the same comapny that brought us the CTS, so I seem to think that your Saab will rust about the same time as the CTS if the end up in a junkyard, by the way, did you hear the new 9-3 was being investigated for issues

Steve February 5th, 2008 12:25 AM Link

To be honest? I’d rather have the CTS than the new Merc C… and it’d be a hard choice for me if it was between this and a 335i… if they were given to me.

If I was spending my own money? Please, I wouldn’t ever make it past the Caddy dealer.

I like it; the styling is original, distinctive and absolutely gorgeous (although I understand that all you BMW fanboys will disagree merely because it doesn’t come from Europe). I especially relish the thought of the CTS-V with 550 hp for a mere $62k. What’s it going to cost to get a BMW or Mercedes with that kind of horsepower?

Terry February 5th, 2008 1:28 AM Link

Also, Cadillac ranked ahead of both BMW and Mercedes-Benz in the J.D. Power and Associates 2007 Vehicle Dependability Study, just behind Buick and Lexus who tied for first. In partiular, Buick and Lexus each scored 145, Cadillac scored 162, BMW scored 182 and Mercedes-Benz scored 212. In this ranking, lower is better as it indicates the number of problems identified per 100 vehicles sold.

Last but not least, I am the proud owner of an Infiniti G35 MT (I love it), but I must confess that it has been back to the dealer far more times for minor repairs than my previous car, which was a Chevy Malibu.

Yeah, but Consumer’s Report is complete sh*t if your an enthusiast.
