It looks as if Cadillac is preparing to bring drivers the CTS wagon they never knew that they always wanted, as evidenced by these new spy shots of a sport wagon variant from the lens of Brenda Priddy & Co.

Priddy tells us that General Motors will start production of the wagon at the Lansing Grand River Assembly Plant in the spring of 2009. Sales targets for the car will be in the neighborhood of 10,000 to 12,000 units per year, with untold numbers of groceries, camping equipment, and dogs set to be hauled.

Even in this bulky cladding we can’t help but feel that the edgy lines of the CTS will make a handsome translation to wagon form. Have a look at the spy images in the gallery below or click through the jump to read Priddy’s thoughts. Make sure to leave us your thoughts on the CTS wagon, in comments.

Today we caught the third Cadillac CTS variant out testing, the CTS wagon.Codenamed GMX 206, GM will start building this luxury wagon in the spring of 2009. It will be built alongside the CTS sedan and coupe at the Lansing Grand River Assembly Plant. Expect GM to build around 10,000-12,000 units a year with a significant portion of that run earmarked for sales in Europe.

Back in the U.S., once GM kills the SRX in the first or second quarter of 2009, it will be replacement by committee with the CTS wagon and BRX attempting to fill the SRX’s spot in Cadillac’s lineup.

I like it. I was planning on an A4 Avant, but this is an interesting alternative.

I assume the bean counters will kill the CTS-V wagon, but I’d be interested in that even more.

Wagons Yes! More gas-sucking SUV’s NO!

I bet it will look better as a wagon than a sedan. I wonder if it will be offered with a manual?

I like it, along with most wagons. I agree it might even look better than the sedan. Has Caddy ever had a wagon before?

I’d love to reaplce our Volvo 960 Wagon with a CTS wagon, especially a V series one!

Smart move for the European market, they love wagons over there, how about and off road version like the Volvo XC70

Michael April 25th, 2008 5:58 PM Link

I’ve always wanted a Volvo wagon, but if Cadillac makes this, it would most definitely be one I would consider. I’m sure it will be a stunning wagon, whether in V form or not!

I do not know if Caddy would sell the wagon in V form in the States, BMW does not sell the M5 wagon here

Great, but only if it is offered with a stick.Thae I will consider it very quickly!

Cadillac wagons have been around for decades, it’s just that there’s usually only a single passenger laying in the back.

Good one Dante! They have low expectations so I think it will meet those expectations. I won’t be trading my CTS sedan in on it..

Cicero April 25th, 2008 11:35 PM Link

Since this model is direct more to the European market, I think Caddy will survive you not buying one southern. Here is hoping they do a shooting brake 2 door wagon like what BMW and MB are thinking of doing with their wagons.

I saw the prototype almost two years ago in the GM Design studio, and it blew me away. It is gorgeous (yes, I cannot believe I am calling a wagon gorgeous) and there is nothing like it on the market in the States. They will sell more than 10K units if they don’t overprice it. It is perfect for small families looking to replace an SUV with something that’s sporty. I like it better than the sedan or coupe. It’s that good.

Wagons make more sense than SUV’s. Lower center of gravity, better handling, better fuel economy, same utility. I am glad to see GM bringing one back to the US. Hope this trend continues. Will logic eventually trump macho? Make one with a hybrid drive that rivals the Prius and you may have something.

I am buying a wagon, I want to buy a car from the US but there are no choices when it comes to wagons. I love the CTS and would buy one if a sedan is what I needed but I need cargo rm and I don’t want an SUV. I will buy a BMW 3 wagon unless Cadillac makes the CTS wagon.
