Pontiac Ute to be Dubbed ‘G8 ST’
Here’s a quick update for all those of you out there alert for more information about the Pontiac G8 version of the Holden Ute.
Still scheduled to hit the market as a 2008 model, Pontiac will call its Ute the G8 ST, with the ST standing for, you guessed it, sport truck. Pontiac will leave the V-6 version of the ST down under, offering the truck with only the 6.0-liter V-8. Pricing is expected to start at a pretty competitive $31,000, not a huge bill for that kind of displacement.
Look for specific details and loads of images when the G8 ST drops for real at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

I like the idea, but a solely V-8 package may not be good for sales. If Pontiac's aim is low volume, best of luck.

I agree. Bring the V6, bring the Chevy, the GMC, and do a Buick too, just bring every version available, and make the base version more affordable.
DON'T make it expensive and V8 only...I can see another Chevy SSR by taking that route.

I think GM had a shot at a very practical basic transportation that a lot of home owners would have loved - enough carrying capacity to handle light truck duty, and good enough as a commute car for work. All they needed to do is put a small, efficient engine in it (2l diesel anyone?), 5sp stick, and drop the price to low teens. They would have had a hit on their hands. Now they will have another low volume, short-lived, niche product.

Oh, and get rid of those low-hanging skirts. It screams "ghetto cruiser".

Bring over the V6, make a second V6 offer with Direct Injection, and a stick the 4.5 liter diesel going into the Silverado in it, and maybe do a hybrid version to shut up the tree huggers. The wagon is gorgeous for a wagon and this is a great product, but V8 only is going to hurt it at a time when regular is over $3 a gallon. Why not use the 5.3 liter, gets better milage in the Silverado then any other truck and in a lighter, smaller vehicle would do even better.

I agree that they need the V6 - there are no longer any cheap, small trucks and this could be a nice substitute. I'd bet my brother-in-law would look into it, but not with the V8.

That sounds as exciting as a Lifetime TV special.

Exciting? Hell, no, it's not exciting, but it might be profitable for a change.

As long as it can tow my race trailer, I'm sold.

A healthy V6 with a small V8 option (and a hi-perf 350+ V8), with a 5- or 6-speed manual and a 4-speed automatic, available in both 2wd and 4wd would cover a lot of potential buyers. Make it easy for aftermarket accessory companies to develop gee-gaw parts ahead of time, and it's a sure winner.
I would buy the first 2wd auto V8 in yellow to come off the line.
