Nine-tenths the size? makes me ask myself, why bother? not small enough. Anybody have more comment on this?

Just plain stupid. The mid-size market is pointless, they cost nearly the same and get nearly the same gas mileage as full size trucks. Glad I bought my 08 4 cylinder Ranger while supplies last. I can't believe Ford would be so dumb with $3.75 gas prices. They need a truck that replaces the current truck that can get 30+ mpg (2.3l Ranger).

Dude the only truck that can replace a Ranger is a Ranger.
Rangers coming back in 2012 anyway.
Plus the F-100 is more like a replacement for the explorer sport track,not the Ranger as temporary as it's death would be.

A smaller than 1/2 ton is a good idea, especially with the new DI TT V6 coming on the horizon. Lighter weight will mean even better fuel economy than a 1/2 ton with the same engine. It'll be a good replacement for the mid size trucks.

If it's less than 26 mpg, it's a wasted effort in my book.

FFFFFFFFFALCON UTE!

Texas_Dude,
I'll gladly take 26 mpg over the current 16-18 I'm getting now. As long as they leave the gas tank size the same, that's HUGE savings in my book. You can go buy a Yaris.

Falcon ute with a diesel. I wish they would speed up the development of the new Ranger, and hope it gets a diesel option or two, I am glad that Ford will also have a mid size, gives more options to the public.

Fusion ute.

The Falcon ute idea is a good one - Wonder if Ford might be waiting to see if Pontiac's 'G8truck' is a hit before moving forward with something of that nature?

@mena:
My 08 2.3L Ranger gets 26 actual mpg with a 5" lift and 32" tires. Prior to the lift I was getting 28-30. I check my mpg at every fill up of a tank, and it was consistent. If your Ranger gets 16 mpg, that sux for you.. but you must have the underpowered V6. :)
What's with the Yaris comment? Yaris =/= Truck.
