eBay Auction of the Day: 2002 Lincoln Blackwood

2002-lincoln-blackwood-hl.jpg

In 1999 Lincoln showed the concept version of its Blackwood luxury pickup at the North American International Auto Show. The automaker had been emboldened by the success of its Navigator SUV, and felt that the market was right for a high-spec, if slightly useless, rendition of a Ford F-150.

When the truck went on sale in 2001 it had been positioned to be sold as an exclusive, limited-run vehicle. Lincoln only offered the Blackwood only with a black interior and exterior, an automated tonneau covered bed, and in rear-drive form. The asking price was a hefty $52,000.

Not surprisingly, the Blackwood was a flop, selling around 3,000 examples in its one model year.

Today Lincoln’s ultimate expression of pickup luxury can be had for under $20K on eBay Motors. This 63,000-mile example seems to be in excellent mechanical repair, with an interior that is only marred by some cracking of the leather on the rear seats. The Texas truck is rust free, and still sure to turn heads, as the Blackwood is a pretty rare sight on today’s roads.

With current bidding at only $100 (reserve not met), we can't think of a more cost efficient way for the luxury truck fan to impress (or at least befuddle) his neighbors. Good luck.

The Aviator did little better. Wasn’t the Blackwood available in two-wheel-drive only? With cracks already in the cabin at this point, this was not a luxury vehicle cared for or crafted with the finest hands. I am sure we will be speaking of the Mark LT in the same way six years from now, even though that truck was better executed, just poorly conceived.

Worst. Pickup truck. Ever. A velvet-lined bed? What in the world were they thinking....

rip

That leather is thrashed.

After only 63k miles... and a $52k vehicle. This is one reason why American manufacturers suck.

FPF422

cracking of the leather after 9 years... Wow, that's "quality"...

Jeff

I'll bid $50.

The Stig

Overpriced useless junk then......overpriced useless junk now. Yes they were only 2WD thus making it useless as an all year vehicle anywhere where it snows. Just because it was rare doesn't mean it's collectible or interesting, except as something to make fun of.

Steve

Rare doesn't always mean collectible or desireable. Well preserved Chevy Chevettes are rare. Some cars are just rare because they made little sense when new and they couldn't give them away. I suppose at the BIN price of under $18k, this makes a bit more sense today than when it was new... Now it's just a used 2wd crew-cab pickup truck with all the trimmings.

I think you guys are missing the point. The Blackwood is a vehicle for someone who doesn't want to park next to an identical ride in the parking lot. Rip, while I appreciate your import arrogance, the cracks in the leather are most likely due to a lack of care by the owner and the Texas heat. The Blackwood used Connely(sp?) leather, just like the European rides. I was in the automobile business with a mega-dealer for six years selling Toyota, VW, Porsche, Audi and Subaru. I've driven my share of the imports and I am currently EXTREMELY pleased driving my Caddy CTS. I will probably replace this 2006 CTS for the new restyled CTS. I am that pleased. Now, back to the Blackwood. I recently purchased a one owner example for the express purpose of towing a trailer. With a tow rating of 8700#, it does an excellent job. Was the Blackwood over-priced and poorly marketed when new? Yep. Could I have purchased a more luxurious and comfortable tow vehicle for less than 17k. Nope. BTW, since I can't haul anything but scuba gear, I have named the Blackwood the "Tow Truck!"

Terry:
A nice reply to the critics of the Blackwood. I agree (with them about some aspects) i.e. the lack of four-wheel drive, a one-color-only specification, etc. but in truth, this 'used truck'could be a wise investment, perhaps not for posterity, but for the value it represents. As my uncle used to say, 'they're all good until they don't work'. Would anyone like to relate the woes with some pricey vehicles out there, how about glitches requiring replaement of the seat steering position of their Lexus memory settings, or the engine replacement of the vaunted Porshe Boxster? Very desirable autos but with some major problems, despite their engineering and prestige. A lot depends on what you're looking for and willing to put up with. DS
