eBay Auction of the Day: 1977 Lamborghini Countach LP400

This 1977 Lamborghini Countach LP400 found for sale on eBay Motors, is about as original a car as a collector could hope to find.

(Click on the jump to read on about this beautiful classic Lamborghini.)

Having covered only 12,000 miles from new, the two-owner Countach has been utterly pampered over its life. The car has never been driven in wet weather (as the removal of the windshield wipers will attest), or even exposed to heat or sunlight for long periods of time. It still wears all the paint, glass, leather, and rubber, right down to the tires, that it had when it left the Lamborghini works.

This Countach is so pristine in fact, that it has made appearances in the pages of Road and Track (December 1986), and on the podium at the 2007 Concorso Italiano in Monterey. The asking price reflects the condition of the car, which is (somewhat unfortunately) an investment grade vehicle, with a “buy it now

Marcello Gandini deserves a pat on the back for designing a car that was wildly different from the Miura. The Countach matches, even surpasses, the Miura as an automotive icon, being the dream car for two generations of young sports car lovers. As it can be seen, however, the Countach’s design has not aged gracefully. The car’s flat lines and many folds have not held the same enchantment as its curvaceous predecessor. The ridiculously tight cabin and poor visibility made itcreated the negative impractical Italian sports car stereotype that only recently has faded from pop culture.

Shoot, I thought I deleted the "made it" part of the first paragraph's last sentence.

Perfect, I think it looks better with time.

I'd be more than a little hesitant to run it on the original tires. Tire manufacturers themselves say that a normal tire isn't safe after something like 8 years. It's even worse with a high-speed tire.

This looks to be one of those cars for people who like to look at them standing still, not for people who love how they drive. The collector types, who want to try to stop time. That's a hopeless fight. It's called entropy.

I have to agree with Mr. Hartmann. I think the clean Countach (re: the early ones) is stunning. Bit much at this price though.

Love this car...

Way, way, way ahead of its time. Same basic shape still being used today.

Early Countach models like this LP400 have been skyrocketing in value over the last couple of years--well ahead of the more contrived (and admittedly more powerful) later cars. The BIN pricing on this one does seem optimistic, but it sure is pretty...

[...] Though LM002 may be the spiritual ancestor of vehicles like Porsche’s Cayenne, and the Range Rover Sport, it lacks the polish of those more modern vehicles. It was in many ways, quite tacky, featuring bold graphics and a rather sleazy interior that hasn’t aged well. The Lamborghini did have considerable off-road prowess though, as well as being able to boast that it shared a V-12 powerplant with the legendary Countach. [...]
