When the Aston Martin first revealed its V12 Vantage RS Concept this past December, the car was widely praised for its typically beautiful sports car styling. What was a bit more of a question though, was the slightly odd power blue paint that covered the car from stem to stern.

While the color may have received mixed reviews (this writer loves it), Aston thought enough of the new hue to hold a naming contest for it open to the public. Well the results of that contest have come due, and the favorite entry turned out to be “Mako Blue.” Aston apparently loved the shark connotations of the Mako tag, assuming the connection to the predatory performance of its super car lineup.

We’ll give you a chance to reevaluate and comment on the new blue, with live and stock galleries of the V12 Vantage RS below.

Mako Blue Chosen for V12 Vantage RS Concept

Mako Blue Chosen for V12 Vantage RS ConceptGaydon, 13.02.08. The newly housed Aston Martin Design team has selected a name for the colour of the company’s V12 Vantage RS concept car, after inviting suggestions from the public at the opening of the company’s new Design Studio last year.

The V12 Vantage RS was unveiled in December by Chief Executive Officer, Dr Ulrich Bez, who, during his speech, invited suggestions to name the colour of the concept. The Aston Martin design team was inundated with suggestions, and after careful consideration has selected ‘Mako Blue’ as the name of the concept colour.

Design Director, Marek Reichman said: “The name is taken from the Mako shark, which is the fastest and most agile shark known to man. We thought the name not only reflected the colour, but also that the nature of the shark was synonymous with the character of the car.

“The Maori translation for ‘Mako’ is ‘Blue Lightning’ which obviously is descriptive of both colour and car - a very befitting name.”

Mat Watson, who penned the winning name added: “The name came to me instantly, when I first saw the car. There is a distinct parallel between the shark and the car – both being the fastest of their kind.”

The environmentally sustainable Design Studio is the marque’s first purpose-built and fully-owned design facility. The Vantage RS concept features a 600bhp 6.0 V12 engine and has been subjected to a weight-loss programme. The result is the fastest ever road-going Aston Martin.

Aston Martin is currently evaluating feedback from customers to the Vantage RS concept, with a view to a possible low-volume production run should sufficient demand exist.

I love that color, and I like the recent trend towards matte finishes on autos. I think it better accentuates a cars lines when there is no competition with surface reflections.

And just for Ducati_Minor

I wish they made a diesel. :)

Beautiful car with one Hell of an engine. Beautiful color too. Bears no relation to any blue on a Mako shark, but it is a lovely color.

Well, there is no mistaking that this is an Aston Martin. It LOOKS like an Aston Martin … until you look inside. Grey suede? I would expect to find leather inside, and maybe even grey leather. But suede? That explains the wimpy blue color on the outside. It had to go with the grey suede on the inside. I am not sure why, but looking at the grey suede and the blue paint only makes me think of Jill St. James. Or, is it Jill St. John?

Mako Blue is a sick color name. From the pictures, I don’t quite like that hue of blue, but “mako” just evokes images of a bloody fast beast with vicious performance.
