Awesome. Just awesome.
Ya know… Electrics will never be the same as current cars (sound, smell, etc)… But, anybody that doesn’t think they could have fun in this is fooling themselves.
While American muscle cars may not seem like the most obvious destination for all-electric powertrains, the allure of the green movement seems to be pulling in new representatives by the day. Two cases of this, set to appear at the 34th Annual Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach this weekend, are the Tjaarda EVX Mustang and the HST Shelby Cobra EVX.
The pair of EVs will take part in the GP’s “Green Power Prix-View,” and hope to show that electric need not mean slow. Each car packs a 300 horsepower electric motor with lithium ion phosphate battery packs by K2 Energy Solutions. The motors are said to create 1,000 pound-feet of torque at zero rpm, race from 0 to 60 in less than four seconds, and have an effective range of 100 miles between charges. The nouveau Shelby Cobra will top out at a stirring 150 mph, while the Mustang will make it to 120 mph.
While the environmental and performance cases may be compelling, the price of the EV muscle cars is decidedly less so. Asking price for the Tjaarda Mustang is around $80,000 and you’ll spend $125,000 on the Shelby.

Until they come up with a system to either keep the battery charged, recharge the batteries in the same time it takes to fill up at a gas station, or have a range of at least 1000 miles on a charge, electrics will be no more than expensive curiosities. An inexpensive electric version of the Smart or something similar with enough capacity to commute to work and back before being plugged in for the night, might be useful, but the Tesla, and these two Mustangs are just expensive toys of very limited practical value.
Pretty neat. Good thing that the the builders of the first gasoline cars that couldn’t get 1000 mile range kept at it……….
I sure don’t like that over worked front end on the Mustang tho, and I don’t care what the motive power is..that’s just plain zit city.
$80k for the Mustang isn’t bad in any way, shape or form. Sure it’s out of reach for the average person, but the wealthy guy who wants to have a blast while not supporting the oil countries is a great target buyer. The range is *a little* weak, but not the end of the world. How many people actually drive 100+ miles per day?
About 90% of the reason why one buys a Mustang or Cobra is not the speed or acceleration or even the looks… it’s that magical rumble you only find in an american V8.
Seems like the MX-5’s excellent little chassis would be a better place for to show how electric can have go.

Well color me Al Gore. It’s not just about speed. A Honda Accord V6 is fast (low 14’s in the 1/4 mile) but boring. For me, it’s about the driving experience. The sights, sounds, and smells of driving. A HUGE part of that experience is sound. The sound of a car makes an enjoyable experience exhilarating.
Electric cars make no sound and as much as I like sound, the loss of it will suck big time. No more Ferrari V12’s, no more Chevy V8’s. Nothing to distinguish one car from another other than the way it looks. Cars will truly be judged by the cover, not by the book. Also, I have some electronic back ground and, quite frankly, an electric motor is an electric motor. Sure, maybe Ferrari will make the casing out of carbon fiber, but the operation and construction of the motor will be the same from Hyundai to Lamborghini.
I guess I’ll be spending more money on computers in the future.
A lot of extra body parts, clean it up a bit and it would be sharp !! It would certainly be a great city vehicle !!
