Spied: Lincoln MKS Sedan

If the Lincoln brand is to do more than subsist, its pending flagship, the MKS sedan, will have to well and truly bring the fight to the competition.

These are the first known shots of the Mazda6-based luxury saloon, which debuted at the North American International Auto Show in 2006. Sources peg the car as riding on either a derivation of the P2 architecture that underpins Volvo’s S80, or a stretched version of the Mazda6 platform. And while this prototype is heavily cladded, the roofline and general shape of the car appears to be faithful to that of the concept.

The spy shooters over at KGP notes that the mule’s grille looks rather different than the showcar, with a design that is reminiscent of 2007’s MKR concept, which also debuted in Detroit. The taillamps have also been changed over to a clear element design, with what KGP calls a “neon red glow” when activated. We’re betting on LEDs.

The big difference from the concept, of course, is that it won’t arrive with a V-8 engine, a controversial move that could put a crimp in Ford’s plans to challenge the best that Europe and Japan has to offer. The saloon was originally earmarked to receive a derivation of the Yamaha 4.4-liter V-8 unit from Ford’s Swedish outpost, Volvo, but the extra cylinders were reportedly nixed out of cost concerns last summer.

Lincoln appears to be finally preparing a credible entry above the Mazda6-based MKZ, in the guise of this prototype for the Lincoln MKS. The MKS–first seen as a concept at the Detroit’s 2006 North American International Auto Show–looks like it has made a smooth transition from show car to reality, with minimal changes to the car’s overall shape. The main character lines and greenhouse shape mimic the concept, with noticeable differences residing only in the details.

This prototype’s grille displays surface development different from
the MKS concept, leaning instead toward the sexy ‘07 MKR concept
(except for the MKR’s split-grille design). The MKS’ upswept headlight slits will reach production with minor alterations to the internal lighting elements themselves. The concept’s red tail-lights have been changed to white on this prototype, with a pleasing neon red glow when activated. The tail-light shape itself appears largely unchanged.

The MKS concept had a 114-inch wheelbase, and a 4.4-liter 315- horsepower V8, and production versions were pegged to have the Yamaha derived 4.8-liter V8, currently found in the Volvo XC90. That engine program has reportedly been scrapped, however, due to cost concerns, possibly leaving this Lincoln flagship to soldier on with only a V6 option.

We expect to see this production MKS go public next January at the
2008 NAIAS.

I like the idea of this, but I’ll wait to see if they nail it when it comes out. Unfortunately they won’t launch with the best engine lineup, but maybe the interior and exterior will be enough to win. The difficult aspect of managing new product in a cost-cutting environment (not just a regular cost-cutting environment, but a very serious one) is that you end up wanting to do two vehicles at 50% of what you had originally wanted to do. This is typical of manufacturing companies such as Ford (as opposed to marketing-focused ones).

A different strategy would be to do less cars and trucks, but load each one with exactly the kind of engineering, design, and power that you want.

This sounds simple but in fact many companies just plain pick the wrong strategy.

[…] One could easily argue the upcoming MKS sedan is the most important vehicle to Lincoln’s solvency in the modern era. Debuted as a concept at the Detroit Auto Show in early 2006 (see gallery for reference), the sedan received a luke warm reaction that was tempered further when it was discovered the production model wouldn’t be offered with a V8. Regardless, we’re ready to give the MKS the benefit of the doubt until the production version shows up. Proof that Lincoln’s on its way to that day have just surfaced in the form of these first spy shots of a Lincoln MKS mule taken by the spy fiends at KGP Photography. […]

With any luck, it’ll have the “Twinforce” motor at its debut, which would make more headlines than anything else about the car.

Next year’s NAIAS should be very interesting for Ford, as the new F150, the Flex, and other vehicles will be debuting.

if this car is only getting the 3.5 its doa. its not a bad engine but it just get it done compared to others in the segment.

I was under the impression that this car’s architecture was based on the previous-generation Volvo S80 like the Five Hundred/Freestyle, not the Mazda6 like the MKZ. I’ve seen the mule out on I-94, and it sure looks a lot bigger than the Mazda6.

I feel disgusted seeing a typical american brand like lincoln building car which look like european or,even worse, asian!

It looks like it’s based on the S80. That will be a blast to drive if the V6 Twin Turbo is dropped in this thing, especially if the roughly 360 hp goes through the four corners.

The new naming convention is difficult to deal with. I don’t know what the difference between an S and a Z is. I get the X, but where to go up from the X? I’d have preferred:

Cars:
Mark A 3.5, 4.4
Mark B 4.4

Trucks:
Mark XA 4.4
Mark XB 5.7

Something like that.

I sure hope this isn’t one of those “We’re lincoln, we’ll teach them - they are the student to us” deals that comes out of Detroit sometimes. The good Mark anythings were made a long, long time ago.

Otherwise, ask anyone who drives an Infinity or a BMW - 6 cylinders is enough in this bracket, so long as they don’t suck.

To the best of my knowledge, I thought this car is based on a stretched Mustang platform. I specifically remember it being rear drive, turbo V-6.

I think I’ll take the Mazda6. Something just tells that this won’t come out right.

I don;t see what all the fuss is about just offering a V6. 90% of the Cadillac CTS and STS are sold with the standard V6 and same with the Buick Lucerne. With new mileage standards coming, why not congratulate Lincoln (Ford) on forward thinking.

Sandy April 19th, 2007 12:01 AM Link

HAVE TO WAIT TO SEE FINISHED PRODUCT. THE VOLVO S80 IS A TERRIFIC CAR, BUT THE MAZDA 6 ? MAYBE IT IS, ALSO, BUT I DON’T THINK I’D WANT A MAZDA 6 UNDER ME FOR WHAT…… 60 THOU.
KEEPING MY 2003 TOWN CAR A WHILE LONGER. JUST TURNED 11 THOUSAND MILES.

Absolutely appauling. Visually hideous. The sight of two-toned side-view mirrors makes me sad for FoMoCo.

“These are the first known shots of the Mazda6-based luxury saloon….”

Sorry, but if this choice of platofrm turns out to be true, the fight is already over. A stretched Zephyr (or MKZ, or whatever it’s called this season) won’t sway anyone from the competition.

I still think it’s a shame they didn’t develop the LS instead; was a nice car that deserved better.

gregh1952 April 19th, 2007 11:00 AM Link

Its based on the Volvo architecture that the 500, now Taurus is based on, not the Mazda 6.

The Stig April 19th, 2007 11:24 AM Link

You got it Patrick. That’s exactly what they should have done - develop the LS. They finally made a good car, let it languish, then it died.

Adam W. April 19th, 2007 12:36 PM Link

Don’t forget this is just a mule. I wouldn’t bet the farm on the color of the sideviews, but you can.

The important factor in the V6 vs. V8 debate is the option. Aside from full-size trucks, most of any car is sold with the smaller engine. However, for a flagship, the nameplate needs to offer a V8 — especially in this segment, just ask Acura. It won’t matter if they only sell 400 a year, it is a marketing image that usually proves out to be worth the minor effort and increased sticker. All the ads will always say “Starting at…” with the V6 price anyway.

It’s the same reason FMC built the GT and the new Shelby’s. Imaage.

Gregh -

We continue to hear conflicting stories about what the production car will be based on, but I’ve updated the article to avoid any confusion. Thanks.

I used to sell Lincolns thirty-plus years ago. I quit because I couldn’t handle the guilt of delivering the overpriced carnival rides I talked people into buying.

The old 50s-era Marks, which were “small cars” compared to the Continentals and Capris, exuded class with far less bulk than the traditional luxury barge, so we know that Lincoln knew how to do it once.

And then they forgot. (But who could forget the Versailles. Oh, OK.)

Can a Lincoln flagship get by with a V-6? Sure, if it has some interesting technology that makes it a flagship engine and can do 0-60 in the mid-5s. Better if there was a V-6 option that could dust a CTS-V in the way those V-6 Grand Nationals, Syclones, Typhoons, and Firebirds dusted the competition.

Or, if Lincoln just wants to sell to rich old ladies, they can put all their money into the interior and sound insulation. I just don’t know of any car company that has made it to the top relying on the rich old lady demographic.

Speaking as a 20-something, this is the first Linc since the LS debuted seven or eight years ago that has captured my interest.

I’m going to seriously consider this thing when I get out of law school…as long as I can get a turbo six or an eight. I just hope they offer an AWD setup and have at the very least a blower on that six.

Can’t wait to see pricing on it. There’s no reason this thing can’t be a success. People that piss and moan that no eight will be offered are living in the past–I’d rather have a thoroughly modern six with a blower than a naturally aspirated pushrod 8 ANY day.

(although if they could figure out how to shoehorn the Saleen turbo 5.4 V8, i wouldn’t complain!).

Well Ford’s Lincoln Divisions has finally put the knife and death nell into the Lincoln Town Car. This new MKS, will not save the Lincoln Towncar. This new concept car will probably send me back to Cadillac.

First, I have own 5 new Town Cars and received good service for each, and realize that the TownCar is the best ride in town. Say what you will about the current design be extint, dated, out of zinc with the times, but for all of us 60 and over we do not what twin buckets seat and a stick in the floor with RPM, and a European design. We want a conservative, that gives up a soft comfortable ride, and resonablly priced. We had that in the TOWN CAR.

Suggestion: All you really had to do with the Town Car as I have said for years is take the current mode design and spruce it up, beef it up on par with the “Kitty Cat” and just leave it alone. The MKS, will lose all of us old timers. We don’t want a young soaped up European design car. If we did we would buy a Lexus, or BMW. Lincoln designers you have grossly GROOF this time.

Bring back the old 1998, thru 2007 Lincoln Town Car, spruce it up give it some more power and make it separate and distinct from all other FORD products and watch what happens.

Lincoln designer need to “wake up and smell the Roses!!!” The MKS, looks like something for the young kids to buy, not a conservative business man, or Family man with a good income who wants a luxury car.

Good bye Town Car,,….hello Cadillac Deville…I’m coming back.

Thanks

Would somebody please tell me that this article is a joke. This cannot be a replacement for the Town Car.
A badly designed flagship for the Mazda brand maybe,
who cares, but Lincoln - no way!!!
Fortunately Chrysler is coming out with a long
version of the 300, I’m going to order the brochure
today.

This is just crazy…I just test drove the MKZ today and almost threw up in the car. I hate to turn in my leased V8 LS sport…its a damn shame. They (Lincoln) could have done more to keep the LS alive!

Now, there is NOTHING for a power - performance - prestige buyer to purchase from Lincoln now!

Hence, I test drove a Cadillac CTS4 and got over the fact that it didn’t have a V8…but it DID have rear-wheel drive! Another thing Lincoln turned their back on!

What is this world coming to?
