Mystery Mitsu Spied: Is this the Lancer Ralliart?

mitsu-lancer-ralliart-600.jpg

When we attended the launch of the standard-gauge Mitsubishi Lancer in Santa Barbara last year, we were able to get the ear of company officials who promised us that the Ralliart trim would make a return appearance, but with greater sporting intentions than previous models.

Judging by this Death Valley prototype, this appears to be the case. The silver sedan seen here clearly displays more performance hardware than a garden-variety DE, ES, or GTS Lancer, with a front-mounted intercooler and prominent dual exhausts. Could this be the Ralliart we’ve been promised, or is it just a lower-profile EVO?

The spy shooters at Hidden Image caught this mule, noting that it doesn’t appear to be an EVO given its un-flared fenders and lack of a rear wing. Still, it wears 18-inch alloys (like the GTS) and has a unique recessed mesh grille treatment.

At the Lancer’s California launch, we were told that the Ralliart will likely be upgraded to be “the Subaru WRX to the EVO’s WRX STI.

What if it's something super radical, like a development car to test airflow through a particular grill to prove out intercooler efficiency in a hot climate?

INSANE!

Could be an Evo RS or GT-A

I was also going to say an evo RS

I have no idea what model it's supposed to be, but I would agree with detroit9000. It looks like they are just trying out some different intercooler and exhaust combinations (look how hacked-up the front of the car is, as well as the back where the exhaust tips are at). The mesh grill looks like standard size "chicken wire"-- it's probably just there to make it easier to swap out intercoolers?

[...] Mitsubishi’s answer to the Subaru WRX may be afoot. It’s the Lancer in sub-Evo trim, though the intercooler, dual exhausts and 18″ alloys say it’s more potent than the GTS model. Potentially, this model, caught in Death Valley recently, could be the oft-discussed Ralliart-tuned Lancer or some similar manner of WRX fighter. Considering the taut Lancer GTS would be a performance value if it only had 30 more horsepower, this one might be a steal at ~$25,000. [Winding Road] [...]

Mitsubishi’s new WRX-rival Ralliart caught testing-- Ride Ca

[...] Everyone’s attention so far has been on the Evo, but the AWD turbocharged terror won’t be the only hot Lancer model in Mitsubishi’s updated fleet. Previous reports suggested that a cheaper WRX-rival was in the works, complete with a turbocharged engine and AWD configuration, and this latest Ralliart prototype spotted in California’s Death Valley seems to back up those reports. Hey, it doesn't look like a Kia. Maybe Subaru should take some advice...

It's a Lancer RalliArt (A.k.a. Lancer GSX) Evo has fender bulges, larger front grill with integrated lip and matte center bumper section, and the rear bumper has a diffuser. The RalliArt won't have the increased track width, S-AWC, or power of the Evo, but it will be Turbo and AWD. No one's sure if the RalliArt will get the SST or not.

Well, I guess this could be Mitsubishi's anwser to Subaru's WRX. What really made me think was the fact that this Mitsubishi has only one, on the left side, fog light.

I work at a Mitsubishi dealership. Reps come in all the time and tell us of future products. They have not said anything of a RALLIART version, but following Mitsu tradition, this is most likely what were looking at.
