New York 2008: Audi A4 gets One Helluva Four

Our Audi US moles at the New York show are telling us today that when the latest A4 sedan and Avant arrive here in October of this year that the latest-generation 2.0-liter TFSI engine comes with it.

Amazing but true, this new four-pot turbo will be upped to 211 horsepower output and torque of a whopping 258 pound-feet. That’s up from 200hp and 207lb-ft on the current 2.0-liter TFSI which we already love. We test this fresh motor soon on the happy isle of Ibiza and you’ll lap it all up.

(Click through the jump to read on.)

This gives the 2.0-liter four some fifteen pound-feet more than the naturally aspirated 3.2-liter V6 which will also come in the new A4 when it arrives. Both engines are fitted with Audi’s Audi Valve-Lift system for better power and fuel management besides.

Projected acceleration to 60mph is stated at 6.5 seconds as the 2.0-liter sits in the now much larger A4 quattro sedan. Further, all Avant A4s will come fitted with the optional Steptronic sequential and only with this freshened 2.0-liter TFSI.

Also under discussion in the new A4 for North America is the use of the outstanding 3.0-liter TDI V6 group engine from VW in Europe. This would bring the A4 squarely into competition with BMW’s 335d sedan plans for North America, not to mention the Mercedes E320 Bluetec.

Audi is definitely bringing their ‘A’ game lately!

R8, TT TDI, S5, RS6 Avant…..

What is so “amazing” about this? The 2.0T turbo Ecotec I4 in the Saab 9-3 has similar power (210 hp, albeit a little less torque: 221 lb. ft. @ 2,000 rpm) and has been around since 2003. And it outputs all that without DI.

I am sure the new TFSI engine will be great, but a little more objectivism when reporting goes a long way. Oh wait, you are going to be spending some happy times at Ibiza courtesy of Audi, that must make the engine even more exciting. Amazing but true. :)

Oh 2.0T how I love you.

No stick available in the Avant. Will there be one in the sedan?

I wonder when we will see a diesel version

The 3 liter is nice, but a 4 cylinder diesel like in the TT diesel the showed would be great

Audi… overpriced cars that look good but not particularly fast nor particularly reliable. What’s the point? Oh right.. to look good.

No manual for the Avant?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

Peter March 22nd, 2008 2:04 PM Link

All this “pure drivers car” crap and no stick. Bull^&^%

Mano you obviously haven’t driven an RS4, R8, S5, RS6, S6, or S8. Maybe if you have, you would understand just how good these cars are. In other places besides the United States (yes there are other countries out there) they consistently rate Audi very highly, in fact many times over BMW or Mercedes. The 2.0t and 4.2 V8 engines have received *Ward’s Best Engine* many years in a row. Audi has three levels of cars with 5 Stars in crash testing. Many magazines are saying the new A4 leaves the 3 series and C class in the dust. Do some reading and get out there and test drive one. BTW, I sold my 335 for an S5 and haven’t looked back at BMW since.

This new 2-litre together with the new 7-speed DSG box will be a gem. I cannot think of a better balance between power and economy.

I leased a 2008 2.0 liter turbo TT roadster, chipped it with APR and added Neuspeed intake and the car
is a rocket. Next comes a downpipe, dual exhausts
and stage II chip upgrade. The car is a project car… want 300-350HP from the little beast.

I have no complaints. The car drives and handles flawlessly, fit and finish are first-rate and gas mileage is 25 to 30MPG all the time.

The car turns heads and garners comments of praise from all walks of life and all ages from children
to mature adults. Audi must be doing something right lately, because this is my third one… A4 first and A6 for the wife now.

I’m sold on the brand, and intend to stay that way as long as the styling, technology and reliability are up to par.
