‘08 NAIAS: Hyundai Unveils its Premium 2009 Genesis Sedan
After more spy shots, information leaks, and badge previews than we can count, Hyundai finally made an honest car out of its Genesis sedan, debuting the new premium offering this afternoon deep in the heart of Cobo.
The Genesis seems to be pretty much as advertised now that we’ve seen it first hand, though the behind the wheel experience will ultimately make up our minds about Hyundai’s first foray into the premium segment.
(Click through the jump to read on including Hyundai's official press release.)
The Genesis sedan looked appropriately finished, with pretty lines for a big sedan, and interior refinement that is definitely on par with more costly rivals. The biggest complaint about the Hyundai seems to be one that has been echoed in the past by our readers, namely that the car’s styling is too derivative of the competition, and that it gives off an overall “generic

No comments is a comment. I am bold...
Hire an Italian Design house. One that is relevant to showcase your well earned technology. Think Italdesign. Give them the license to be bold and just build it. No non-artists offering any meaningful feedback.

Well, a lot of those Chinese automakers have hired Italian designers to pen their newest cars. While it prevents them from being carbon copies of existing Japanese cars, they still look rather plain. Why is that?
But admittedly, the Genesis could use a bit of help in the aesthetics department. Maybe it'll come when it gets its mid cycle refresh.

Too many engine options..... seems confusing wth not much difference in the HP ratings.

What?.... Help from Italian designers?
Guess what kind of help they gave Germans during WWII.
A tank with only reverse gears. They had such a splendid practical designing sense to decorate their soldiers head with chicken feathers. Their tanks were only good for retreat and their soldiers were only good becoming a easy target for popshot..or at the best at making love with local woman...hmmm
Yes...I admit they also designed Enzo Ferrari and Maserati Gran Turismo.
But...Given over 200K a pop, even a METEL toy car designers with a bit of backyard garage experience could design one as shiney.
No wonder you only see pictures of violin, sheep skins, and wood grain sample at their showrooms instead of real display of engineering.
Would you care to talk to one of those disgrunted owners of Maserati plagued with all kind of reliability problem? One expensive tin can...may I say. Like I said, it is only good for Saturday night ride to pick up a air headed girl looking for party.
A true design comes with sense, practicality, and sound engineering. That is what I see from Korean automakers.

The new Genesis is a patchwork of other luxury brand designs but it works! Hyundai is a force that is to be reckoned with.
PS They need to get the grill issue resolved in a hurry.

Being from the Northeast (and currently an owner of a slippy BMW 323i), for it to seriously compete they need to offer an all-wheel drive option. When and if that happens, I'd be interested.
