While the hybrid nation is still growing by leaps and bounds, not all drivers are taken with the Toyota-style hybrid that does very well about town, but behaves much like a regular car on the highway.

Taking this into account, Nissan is in the process of developing a hybrid system that allows the electric motor to assist the gas one at both in-town and highway speeds. That kind of speed flexibility would seem to cut the oft-discussed gap between what gas-hybrid engines do well, and what clean-diesel engines excel at. The potential engine also sounds a bit like the setup Porsche showed off on its Cayenne Hybrid Concept at the L.A. Auto Show.
The Nissan hybrid is still pretty well under wraps, but is reportedly heading towards a launch date of post-2010, and could debut in the next generation Infiniti FX.
