It’s true that you never know what you’ll find plying Woodward at the Dream Cruise, but even we about walked into a stop sign when we saw this drop-to-your-knees gorgeous 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing. Certainly, the owner of this stunning alloy creature must’ve taken a wrong turn on the way to this weekend’s Pebble Beach Concours, right?

But no, the custodian of this numbers-matching, recently-restored Gullwing indicates that he “just thought people might enjoy seeing it,” so he gingerly wheeled it along the doorhandle-to-doorhandle crowded side streets abutting Woodward, finally parking it just off of the main drag for all to see. This, despite the fact that it has logged perhaps 40 miles since it left the restoration shop.

Beauty like this isn’t meant to be locked up in a temperature controlled garage, or even on a museum turntable… it’s meant to be regarded and appreciated in its native environ—on the street.

Job done, sir. Job done.

Really nothing to say except “wow”. The car is an absolutely beautiful piece of art, and that particular example looks impeccable. Kudos to the guy indeed.

That thing looks absolutely amazing. Everything about it is just so perfect. I’d love to see one like that in person.

It’s magnificent, but what would be really interesting is getting a shot with some contemporaries. Nothing like lining it up with a ‘55 Chevy or Plymouth Fury to get a sense of where it was in the scheme of things.

It’s still gorgeous and timeless today; I can only imagine how absolutely alien it was fifty years ago.

The Gullwing is credited as the first gasoline-powered motor car with fuel-injection to hit the market. One should note, however, the car needed a mile in front of it to stop. This car was all fun until you had a turn come up.

This is much nicer than the kit cars and hyped-up muscle cars typical of Woodward.
