For legions of Chevrolet Corvette fans around the globe, the introduction of a new model is a life-changing experience, akin to the second coming of the Messiah, only much better. And so it is with the ZR1, the most obsessed-over new car to come out of Detroit in many a fortnight. Why the fascination? Partly because the Corvette crowd is slightly crazy to begin with, and largely because of what this car was rumored to be—some sort of wild animal on wheels, a semi-savage beast that could lap the old Nürburgring circuit fast enough to give a Porsche 911 Turbo morning sickness, stop quick enough to suck the taillamps out of a Lamborghini Reventón, and reach a terminal velocity that would put a Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano back on the boat to Maranello.

I have sat in this car already, but not driven it. It has the same junky corvette interior, though I am told the mechanics are much improved. From the outside though, it looks cool, I have to admit.

Pictures from the photo shoot with Jay Leno, from the Barrett-Jackson auction, can be found on my site http://www.beyondthekm.com in the next few days.

What do you mean “junky corvette interior”. I suggested a few days ago that the American automobile industry was too short sighted to put decent looking interiors in cars and was soundly criticized by all sorts of people telling me that I was restricting my reading to 5 year old issues of Car & Driver. Certainly, the Corvette would have one of the best interiors of any American car made. Are you suggesting that the American car companies still haven’t gotten the message?

Interior? Who cares. I’m not saying its great but, if thats the best you got to complain about I think its safe to say you just tote the kids around in a minivan for the wife because she wears the pants. Someone who truely passionate about cars needs only five things inside a car a comfortible seat, a well placed shifter, clear veiw of the gages, a good feeling steering wheel, and the ability to make your heart rate climb faster than the rpm needle. Other than that, as long as theres no squeeks or rattles. Who care if the interior looks like it was designed Ficher Price or Gucci….. only wannabe’s.

That’s why you suck.

Jay Leno is spot-on in what he said about people who bitch about the interior: basically, go to Bed, Bath & Beyond. This is a sports car, not a Beverly Hills suite. Classic sports cars were not known for having graceful cabons. The MGA, Jaguar XK120, Alfa-Romeo Duetto Spider, and Porsche 356 come to mind. I think the upgraded optional interior package on the base ‘Vettes is nice for the cost. I don’t expect to live in luxury when I’m inside a Corvette. I expect to be in a car that will spank a $100,000 Porsche for half the money.

I would still take the Callaway C12 as my ‘Vette of choice. The ZR-1 has a big thing going for it: it’s pretty much sealed the Chevy/Dodge speed war going back to the Viper RT-10 and C4 ZR-1. Time for Dodge to come up with something newer than a more powerful V-10.
