SSC Ultimate Aero TT Hits 242 MPH, Officials Promise Record-Topping Run
Back in March, the folks responsible for the SSC Ultimate Aero TT convened in Nevada to try and take a crack at the top speed record for a production vehicle. A number of factors precluded shattering the official record of 242 miles-per-hour, currently held by the Koenigsegg CCR (Bugatti’s Veyron 16/4 has unofficially seen 253 mph), but the firm is back at it, and we’ve got the skinny from Junus Khan, SSC’s marketing director.
According to Khan, the company has successfully completed a pair of additional testing sessions, and the Ultimate Aero TT hit 241.4 mph while undergoing transmission temperature testing on May 22. Did we mention that the wheelman only deployed 71-percent of the car’s available throttle to reach that figure? (the SSC UATT boasts nearly 1183 brake horsepower).
The company has dutifully been coordinating with data acquisition firm Dewetron to authenticate and document the car’s results, and is hoping to officially break the world production speed record once-and-for-all in the “very near future.

Is a champcar a production car? You can buy one.
I don't get all this one-off but it's a production car stuff. This is a trumped up kit-car, just like hundreds of others.
Viva la homologation requirements!
Christopher
An essentially pointless exercise, save the marketing kudos that sell these cars to guys with more money than skill who want the bragging rights associated with having the "fastest thing out there". But, as pointless marketing exercises go, it's interesting one, and somewhat fun to watch. Of course, you'll never actually see any of these machines on the track, so they'll never get used for the purpose for which they're ostensibly built...
Don
Who give a crap about this thing?
1,183 hp? What are we trying to do? Launch ourselves out of orbit?
Pointless. Just like the Veyron.
Steve
Pointless? Yes. But still really, really cool. ::chuckles::

Boring. I want 50mpg, 0-60 in 4 sec., that's fun to drive at legal speeds. Do that and I'll be impressed. Any monkey with enough money can drop a huge engine in a car and run some clay in a wind tunnel. Maybe if this was steam powered or something unique I'd at least be interested.

Pointless? Of course it's pointless. It has as much a point to it as any Lamborghini, but to it's potential buyers the amount of money is insignificant, and it's a really cool car anyway.

X.. No any Lambo is´nt pointless.. supercars like this are made to have fun with. What´s pointless about this thing is the 1183HP and the obsession about beeing the fastest in a straight line.
Sadly.. that´s what sells cars to morons who´s only interest is to having the fastest so they can show off..

The point of having a car that goes this fast is more of a engineering wonder than anything else. Who says you can't have fun with this car? I have seen it in person and it is not a one-off car, they are taking orders now. You can't compare the buyers if this car with those of the Veyron because it costs so much less. 1.5 million for a car? I believe that this car is in the $700,000 range, similar to some other super cars. While I am certain that many people will buy this car because it is fast, it must be noted how much of an engineering marvel this car is. It is being done to show the company's "worth" how ever, what company succeeds in business if they don't push the boundaries of what is already out there? Without that, progress will never happen.
Christopher
I won't get into the debate about the merits of Really Fast cars, but I do think the basic purpose of making a car like this is for the halo effect. It helps you sell stuff. I also think that the basic purposes for buying a car like this is the bragging rights. You rarely see these cars at the track. Few of the owners ever take the time to learn to drive well. Even in the hands of a skilled driver, this kind of power is never going to be particularly fun.
But I like watching the circus b/c (i) there are engineering challenges that have to be solved to make something like this and (ii) every time a company raises the bar at the highest end of the market, it helps slowly raise the bar at the middle-end of the market, where the rest of us live.
Still, I just wish companies would emphasize lightness over power. The last thing I want is some uber-sedan with 500hp and 2 TONS of weight. Sure, with the right electronics and gizmos, you can get mass to turn, but that doesn't make it tossable or fun.
Don
I guess it's only pointless to people who can't afford one.
lambo lp640
unofficialy hit 253... it did hit 253 dumasses. oh and it didn't hit 241.4 at 71% throttle. it hit 230 at 56% throttle. ideots
lambo lp640
yo lucas krown. the official top speed is 253 by the bugatti veyron not the koenigsegg ccr. any way thats not even the fastest koenigsegg. its the koenigsegg ccx which goes 245 dum ass.
lambo lp640
sorry lucas krown i ment x. i completly agree about wanting the fastest car in a strait line. seriously what are the going to do when they come to a turn. thats why i hat drag cars... shure thier fast but only in a strait line. the ultimate aero tt does have penske suspension thou which is formula 1 suspension.
lambo lp640
i would stiil like to have one thou because knowing your car can go that fast is awsome.
lambo lp640
christopher is completely right because it does help raise the bar but with how much gas these things take up and the gas prices these days damn!!!! i mean one of these rich priks won't be paying attention one of these days and end up out in the middle of no where stranded because there gas runs out so quickly.plus a hudge waist of gas money. i guess thats why these things arn't driven that much.
Perry
I think the obvious descriptive here is hubris. You know you as an owner will never do 240+ mph, but when your neighbor pulls into his driveway with a mere lambo, you can chuckle knowingly and say "nice ford".
James Booth
Supercars arent pointless, they tend to show all of us who the rich showoffs are. Most of them dont even drive themselves around anyway.
The TT is a very good looking car and with a modest 400hp I would love to own one. Here in the states we cant casually do 200+mph so it is mostly about looks and corners. This car looks fast parked but I wouldnt need or want to feed one bit more than 1/2 the horse power.
But that doesnt matter anyhow because the thing will be of limited # and stupid priced anyway.

why are there so many haters here. why can't you just appreciate the car the car for what it is and what it can do. this car was not designed or made for everyone and is only pointless to those who can't afford it.
if you wanted 50 miles per gallon 0-60 in 4 sec and can handle, buy a motorcycle.
if you wanted to save money on gas buy a prius.
Why would you expect this car to do any of these when there are already other vehicles out there that can already do those.
This manufacturer is trying to do something different and all it gets are idiots that have never driven anything even a 1/4 as good as this car talking smack on something they know absolutely nothing about.
Bryan
Bunch of haters, the car is pimp
VAGginit
Actually I think Lamborghinis are affiliated with VAG (like the Bugatti)not Ford Perry.
And its all about pushing the envelope...NEXT on CARS OF TOMORROW: why doesn't one of you make a car out of carbon-fibre ipregnated hydrogen (maybe helium is a better choice) that is powered by water and that runs on two D cell batteries to power all the electronics that glides along on a magnetic field.
Rob
This car is literally half the size of the Veyron. It cost about a third of the price, and it looks a lot better. There really isn't anywhere to drive that fast safely (for the car or for people around you), but it is nice to know that if you needed to get somewhere fast or run from someone, you have the ability. It's the same concept with street bikes.

Waaaay cool. I don't like the looks of the bugatti (sp?) but this car is hot. If you don't like it then go enjoy your kia.
BUGATTI RULES
i think this car is pretty sweet lookin but i like the bugatti more just cuz of the way it looks and the special key thing that drops the car down and lowers the spoiler i thot that was sweet. i also think the super car thing is fasinating i cant believe that a car can move that fast its incredible

My 91 honda civic has 400 whp and i payed $5,000 to get it there. Much better rate of return for the money I think :)

I can't be bothered with anything these days, but shrug. I just don't have anything to say recently.

Don probably has an original IBM computer running DOS and clocking in at 6mhz. This is about technology upgrades not how long ones penis isn't or about building the next Barney Rubble special.
