What is the question to which the ZR1 is the answer? I never thought the Z06's problem was power or torque, so how does more of that make this a better car? Or was GM envious of the GT500, another car with power way beyond chassis?

That's quite the jump in horsepower...from 430 for the base model to 650 for the ZR1.
No more Z06 soon, though...that's too bad.

Is this the product Chevy & GM really needs to defend its status as world #1 auto manufacturer? When GM is scaling down it's sales estimates for 2008 and Toyota is upgrading theirs research and development of 650 hp Corvette will be the fix GM needs.
I have great respect to Lutz for service to this country and his work at Chrysler (when it lingered), but I think GM needs more practical "car guy" today. They should look for some managers at Toyota or Honda. I also think the current board and CEO should be send on vacation even paid one: they'll do less damage to the company somewhere in Azores.

@ Tom: The ZR1 is probably to counter the insane new Dodge Viper, which has a ridiculous 600 HP, and is still a good bang for the buck. (Although most of us still don't have that much money.)

I haven't read anything about the C6 Z06 fluttering away. If the ZR-1 rumor is true, this will be the third time (I think) the designation has been used. And Tom: the C6 Z06's LS7 V-8 is hardly beyond the chassis dynamics for the Corvette. The Shelby, yes. The Vette, no.

Too bad you will have to deal with a55hole Chevrolet dealers to get one.
I knew GM wouldn't have the balls to put a factory blower on the Z06. Why would anyone spend the rumored 100K for the new ZR1 when they can get a Z06 for WAY less and just spend $7K more on a blower and have a 800-900 HP and supercharged 7.0 motor?
