Ford cajoled Carroll Shelby into introducing the latest iteration of the Mustang, the limited-edition Shelby GT500KR.

With just 1000 of these beauties to go around, we’re guessing that Ford will quickly sell out, with the majority of these 540-horsepower supercharged ponycars going directly into the temperature-controlled garages of serious collectors. What a shame.

What a shame is right! I owned a 1999 Cobra and touted it to everyone despite the known HP and quality problems that it had. When I tried to buy an 07 Cobra the dealer laughed in my face when the subject of paying MSRP came up. He said that for $10k deposit I could get on the list to buy one at $10k over MSRP. I am now the proud owner of a new BMW 33OCIC convertible. Cost me MSRP but at least I feel like I’m getting my money’s worth. I’m now looking to buy a 530 sedan for my wife. Ford sold me 8 of their cars over the years but never again!

When GM releases the Camaro next year there will surely be a 500+ hp version available shortly after. The difference will be that GM will have over 5x the units available. Not to mention it will be quicker in every category.

i agree with Dave, ford is messing up big time by having their “dealer adjusted” prices, they would double their sales and all would be good.

Good-looking, but I’m not impressed. I’m not going to go into a diatribe about these bastardized Shelbys being overweight and all. That said, the ‘07 GT500 was a fast car and very powerful. I just wish Ford engineers would put extra bucks in to trimming the pounds and adding more aesthetic pleasure.

dave,

it happens anytime someone wants to purchase ANYTHING anybody else really wants. market rates fluxuate versus demand. and because you didn’t want to put the money down to get on the list of people to get one just means they had another sucker lined up to pay.

and i’m sure that the first run of camaros will charge over sticker, as demand will outweigh the production.

i find that cheeky too…asking $10 over sticker…but car companies allow it…even Nissan allowed it when the Z350 came out and as i recall so did Honda.

its good that there are companies out there like BMW who believe in integrity pricing…its no wonder GM, Ford and Chrysler are dying…they keep screwing the customer.

Live. Rear. Axle.

Oh sure, very fast in a straight line. But try taking it out along the PCH and good luck going over 30 without leaving a crater along the coast.

Get a Roush.

Fords dealer base has been killing the company for years. The letter from John is typ. That dealer should be stripped of selling Fords and someone that treats buyers with some respect should be used to sell Fords cars. We need to compete with oversea brands and dont need a 3rd party (Fords dealers) to keep hurting Fords brands and Sales. Thank you

[…] Not to be out done Ford/Shelby to release 600 hp Mustang with optional 725 hp version With the new Viper coming out soon and the new Blue Devil Corvette or whatever you want to call it seems that Ford wants to stay in the mix. WINDING ROAD - April 29th, 2007 12:26 PM The spotlights have barely cooled on the GT500KR?s show stand in New York, and already Ford and Shelby are trumpeting new additions to the Mustang stable. Ford Racing has apparently conjured up some Super Snake ?performance packs? for the already formidable Shelby GT500 which will see the ponycar generate up to 600 horsepower (warranted), or 725 hp sans warrantee for the Devil May Care crowd. To be built at Shelby?s Las Vegas compound, the Super Snakes will be built in limited numbers and feature not only power upgrades, but an available ?handling pack,? bigger brakes (six-piston Baers), and various other go-faster bits (carbon-fiber hood, 20-inch Alcoa wheels, etc.). (Click through to the jump for Ford?s complete press release) SHELBY AUTOS AND FORD RACING TO BUILD 600+ HP STREET LEGAL SHELBY GT500 ?SUPER SNAKES? Las Vegas ? April 27, 2007 ? Shelby Automobiles will use newly-developed Ford Racing GT500 performance packs to help transform a limited number of 2007 and 2008 Ford Shelby GT500?s into fire breathing ?Super Snake? coupes. The Super Snake post-title package will include enhancements to the Ford Shelby GT500?s handling, styling and power; tuning options will range from a warranted 600 HP V8 to over 725 HP (unwarranted). Only a limited number of Super Snakes will be built per model year at the Shelby Automobiles facility in Las Vegas beginning in late 2007. ?My team at Shelby Automobiles is always working on new ways to build better performing cars? said Carroll Shelby. ?I told them that I wanted to build a vehicle that could blow the doors off of most anything on the planet. By partnering with Ford Racing, we?re giving enthusiasts a Mustang with that level of performance.? Working together at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway and in Dearborn, Ford Racing and Team Shelby developed the aggressive suspension and engine package specifically for the car. ?Mustang enthusiasts are demanding more from both Ford Racing and Shelby Autos? said Jamie Allison, Manager of Ford Racing Performance Group. ?The GT500 Super Snake package, with its higher horsepower levels and balanced track-inspired tuning, satisfies those demands and then some ? in a uniquely Ford ? Shelby way.? In 1967, Shelby American built one 427-powered GT500 ?Super Snake? for Mel Burns Ford. Carroll Shelby drove it at the Goodyear test track for tire promotion film production. That car reached lap speeds of over 150 mph and a top speed of 170 mph. The new Ford Shelby GT500 Super Snake will be equally potent. ?The name ?Super Snake? is legendary because the one that Shelby built was the pinnacle of muscle cars in 1967,? added Amy Boylan, president of Shelby Automobiles. ?We?re bringing that concept forward 40 years for customers who own a Ford Shelby GT500. We?ll give their car amazing new capabilities.? Ford Racing and Team Shelby developed the GT500 Super Snake package which will include: * Ford Racing Supercharger upgrade kit (SuperPack 600) producing over 600 horsepower and 590 ft.-lbs. of torque * 6-speed manual transmission with 3.73:1 rear axle ratio * Ford Racing performance exhaust system * Ford Racing Handling Pack offering unique performance suspension tuning including Dynamic adjustable dampers, lowering springs, tuned stabilizer bars, and front strut tower brace * Shelby-designed Alcoa 20-inch wheels * Ford Racing short-throw shifter * Baer 6 piston brakes with Shelby cast calipers and larger rotors * Front brake cooling ducts * Unique carbon composite hood featuring classic Shelby design * ?Shelby? lettering across the front edge of hood and rear decklid * ?Super Snake? vehicle badging * Carroll Shelby signature embroidered headrests, floor mats and other Shelby designed components * Official Shelby CSM dash plate […]

Winding Road » Archive » Ford Dangling Shelby GT500 KR In Front Of Dealers July 9th, 2007 1:09 PM Link

[…] Ford is dangling a Shelby GT500 KR-shaped carrot in front of its dealers. With healthy rebates and sales on its F-series pickups (especially its hot-selling Super Duty models), the Blue Oval is keen to maintain sales momentum throughout the summertime. Thus, it is promising dealerships who meet their July F-series sales targets entry into a lottery to win the allocation rights to receive one of fifty examples of the high-performance models. […]

Agree completely that the dealers are in large part responsible for the mess that Ford is in. I’ve been a long-time Ford customer, buying trucks, cars, and several Mustangs. I really wanted a Shelby, but the local dealers are wanting $20k over sticker for the GT500 and $10k over for the “normal” Shelby. When I asked, the argument was “demand” but didn’t Ford say they’d make as many of the Shelby GT’s as customer’s wanted? The only explanation is that the dealers are creating an artificial market.

My next car will be an Infiniti G37 or a Cadillac CTS. No more Fords for me.
