New York 2008: Pontiac Drops Drop-Top for ‘09 Solstice Coupe

We'll admit it - as good as Pontiac's Solstice roadster may look, we've always admired the lines of the original coupe concept shown off in 2002. If you're in our camp, you'll be happy to see many of the concept's cues made their way to the 2009 Solstice Coupe, the semi-fixed roof variant that's debuting this week at the New York Auto Show.

Unlike the concept, the Solstice Coupe adds a removable roof panel over the cockpit, allowing for some open-air motoring. That hard panel, made of a plastic skin wrapped around a magnesium frame, weighs just 31 pounds. We're all for the tapering fastback - especially since it adds some much-needed storage space, but we're disappointed to hear the aforementioned hard roof panel won't fit inside. If you're expecting cloudbursts during a long drive, a folding soft-top panel can be stowed away and deployed in case of meteorological emergencies.

Like its topless sibling, the Coupe comes with the same 2.4-liter I-4, or - in GXP guise - a 2.0-liter turbocharged direct-injection I-4. Regardless of what engine team lies underhood, Coupes won't begin rolling into Pontiac dealerships until early 2009.

NEW YORK – Drawing inspiration from classic sports cars, the 2009 Pontiac Solstice coupe was created for drivers who appreciate both dramatic styling and balanced performance. Unveiled at the New York Auto Show as a GXP model, the Solstice coupe builds on the success of the convertible model while offering a greater range of all-season driving opportunities.

For drivers still wanting an open-air experience, the coupe also features a removable roof panel, fully opening the cockpit to all of the sensations of the road.

"Today's Solstice is the top-selling roadster in the U.S., and we believe this new model has even broader appeal," said Jim Bunnell, Buick-Pontiac-GMC general manager. "The coupe has all the design cues and pleasing performance of the original roadster, and is an all-season alternative for people who enjoy open-air driving."

The coupe is expected to arrive in Pontiac dealerships in early 2009.

The making of a coupe

The new coupe was inspired by the Solstice coupe concept shown at the North American International Auto Show in 2002. True to the concept, it is a modern sports car with classic lines. The roofline has a "fastback" shape with stylized "rails" that run from the front of the roof to the rear, culminating in a stylish and functional ducktail-style rear spoiler.

The coupe's roof is fixed aft of the B-pillars, with side windows and a rear liftglass for access to the cargo area. The roof panel is easily removed from the passenger compartment, and an optional soft roof cover stores in the cargo area. A home storage case for the roof panel will be offered through GM Accessories.

Engineering the design

Despite its dramatic new look, engineers made only minor structural changes to create the Solstice coupe. The rear fenders and rear fascia are the same as those on the convertible. New taillight assemblies flow more smoothly into the tapered roofline.

"The Solstice coupe represents a major collaboration of design and engineering," said Bruce Kosbab, chief engineer. "The sleek lines of the new roof give the car a fresh appearance, yet only minimal changes were made to the body structure – it's a great example of building on an already solid foundation."

Lightweight structure

The roof's structure was strengthened with additional support elements, including an aluminum roof bow attached with aluminum brackets. The bow and brackets are stiff, yet low in mass, a design feature that pervades the coupe's overall construction. The roof includes a lightweight sheet molding compound cover affixed to a rigid aluminum frame for additional lightweight support. A lightweight magnesium roof panel frame weighs just 31 pounds (14.2 kg) and can be removed by one person. The cover is also made of sheet molding compound.

Powertrain and suspension

Because the change to a coupe body style resulted in only a slight increase in curb weight, no drivetrain or suspension changes were necessary to shift from the convertible body structure. Initial tests have shown that the Solstice coupe will deliver ride and handling, acceleration, braking and fuel economy comparable to the convertible model.

The coupe is powered by a standard 2.4L Ecotec four-cylinder engine that generates 173 horsepower (129 kW), while the GXP version is equipped with a 2.0L turbocharged Ecotec engine with 260 horsepower (194 kW).

Interior additions

Much of the coupe's interior remains the same as that of the convertible. However, the area behind the seats was redesigned for easy access to the cargo area, and a storage tray was mounted directly behind the headrests.

Removing the folding-top mechanism made way for a new, flat cargo floor and several storage compartments. The cargo area's covered bins provide secure storage for smaller items. Cargo tie-down hooks help secure irregularly shaped items.

"meteorological emergencies"? Come-onnnnn. this is just PR spin for bean counter intervention. My del Sol fits just fine in the trunk....and the trunk is still usuable.

thing is, your del slow is FWD and inherently slow. the solstice is RWD, and in GXP trim, not all that slow.

This is a damn fine looking car, and after the G8 GXP showing I really think Pontiac might be getting my money on my next car purchase.

And who really cares about cargo space in a 2 seater roadster?

Roadsters, almost by definition, are secondary, recreational cars. They are not intended to be primary vehicles that attempt to do everything reasonably well. Therefore, complaints about storage space are missing the point. If someone needs an all-arounder, then maybe they should not be looking at this car.

This looks very nice. I always preferred the Sky to the Solstice for the drop tops, but this works very well. Shades of a D type in the design.

Yeah, my del Sol might be slow in your eyes, but Honda took the time and expense to build a proper storage space for the roof. BTW, my del Sol has 179k miles on it. Any bets that this GM POS will still be going that long? Can it get 35-40 mpg while still having fun? This thing is a flash in the pan...typical GM.

Some of the comments are amusing. The Lotus Elise received a lot of accolades despite zero storage space and...a removable hard roof you can't store in the car and a foldable soft top you can. Works for them, works for Pontiac. This is a sweet design.

I'm an 88 Fiero Formula Nut. I'm waiting for Pontiac to drop the car due to low sales or Chevy wants a version. Mazda became the world's leader in weekend racing because they stuck with it through thick and thin. Pontiac may have the desire to stick with it but GM is too "profit this quarter" mentality.
I like the Solstice Coupe and Convert and there's no cheap ones on any of my local car lots or on any websites. Now that GM has produced cars according to need instead of flooding the market w cars Solstices are holding their value well. Look at HHR too, same situation.
Finally, I've had it with you who continually bash American cars (whatever that is actually, Canadian or ??) in favor of Asian etc. Wall St Journal recently printed on a back page; "Toyota recently announced extended warrantys on 813,000 Tundra truck frames because of problems with corrosion that leads to holes in the frames of Tacomas for the model years 1995 to 2000. If Ford or Chevy had done the same thing it would have been on the front page !
OR Honda sets odometers ahead 3% so it will sell more cars sooner rather than later, and Honda stamped floorpans in a thinner metal than what the cars crashed tested with !! There is a lot more to this story.
